By the time Game 7 ended in the Mavericks-Spurs series, Dirk Nowitzki was
whipped.
It was evident the way he was slumped over on the court, hands on knees,
sweat dripping and breaths heavy.
It was more evident Monday as the Mavericks cleaned out their lockers, had
exit interviews with the coaches and headed for their off-season homes.
Nowitzki said he was spent by the end of the series, which was far more
competitive than most people imagined it would be. He could not walk after
Game 7 without a noticeable hitch in his get-along.
“Yeah, it’s been a lot of games, especially in the playoffs,” Nowitzki
said Monday. “I averaged almost 40 minutes and playing every other night.
That was a bit much.
“I don’t think I had enough left in the tank [Sunday] to really take this
thing over and take it to another level, which is disappointing. But hey, it
happened. I felt great for 100 games. I only missed two games and I feel
great for that.”
It was another sign that age waits for no man, not even if they are in the
top-10 of the NBA’s all-time scoring list.
Nowitzki may have been on dead legs by the end, but by Monday, he was already
talking up the future — which by the way will be in Dallas. Neither he nor
the Mavericks have any intentions of letting him finish his career anywhere
else.
“Obviously, Dirk’s not going anywhere,” president of basketball operations
Donnie Nelson said. “He’s built this franchise. He’s been with us from day
one. Certainly, there’s negotiations to take place, but he loves this city
and he wants to call it his home. We certainly reciprocate those feelings, so
our hope is we’ll get something done that’s not only in Dirk’s best
[interests] but also affects the flexibility of the future of the Mavericks.”
Nowitzki seconded that opinion.
“We want to get better as a team,” Nowitzki said. “And I’m pretty sure I’
m not going to sign Kobe’s deal [two-year extension, $48 million]
unfortunately.
“We’ll find a good way where I feel respected for what I did and we still
have enough money left for us to get great players in here. [Owner Mark
Cuban] has been great to me and been loyal to me for a long, long time. I’m
sure we’re going to find a great solution for everybody.”
They always do. Four years ago, Nowitzki took more than $15 million less than
the maximum — a hometown discount, if you will — to re-sign with the
Mavericks.
His $22.7 million salary last season will be replaced with a much lower
number. But he won’t qualify for food stamps.
Guesswork would put his 2014-15 salary in the $10-12 million range.
Whatever the number is, it will be arrived at with the understanding that
Nowitzki will not have to be the team’s best player. With Monta Ellis’
showing in his first season in Dallas, it’s reasonable to wonder if — with
the right free-agent signing — the Mavericks might not have Nowitzki as
their third-best player by next season.
“We’ve taken a step in the right direction with Monta,” Nelson said. “He’
s really taken a step forward. But we’re looking for more. To win a
championship, you have to have lots in that arsenal. And certainly Mark is
willing and gracious to spend as much as it takes. He’s proven that over the
years.
“But the reality is we got a cap, and we got to work within some
confinement. And so, having players that can perform at a high level at
decent numbers is a key.”
Not that Nowitzki is ready to become a bit player. He’s bounding with
optimism after playing 80 regular-season games in his 16th season and having
great health.
“It’s been a crazy ride and I was excited this year that I played 80 games,
which nobody really saw coming after last season,” he said. “I still think I
’m going to play a couple more years at a high level. I’m not going
anywhere for a while. So we’ll figure some stuff out the next couple weeks.
“The year before, I was a little worried with the knee injury and not
getting going for a long, long time. But this year, I feel a lot better about
my body and my health, so I feel like I can still play at a high level for a
couple more years.”
Dirk
Dirk
Dirk
Dirk
Dirk
Dirk
Dirk
