Both candidates have portrayed themselves as tough on China's efforts to bring the self-ruled island under Beijing's control. Ma Ying-Jeou has promised to develop economic ties with China, whilst standing firm on the matter of territorial integrity. Ma's nationalist Kuomintang party romped to victory in January's parliamentary elections, and Ma had until recently enjoyed a 20-point polls lead over his rival. But Frank Hsieh of the ruling DP Party has bounced back since China's crackdown in Tibet, warning that under the nationalists, Taiwan risks the same fate. A referendum will be held alongside the election, asking whether Taiwan should seek membership of the UN.
