Tigers' Jose Iglesias 'progressing,' but won't play again this season Detroit — The Tigers are expected to receive the latest medical report on shortstop Jose Iglesias later Wednesday. But regardless of the contents, Iglesias still doesn’t figure to play again for the Tigers before 2015. “We do not plan on having Iglesias back with us this year,” Dave Dombrowski, the Tigers president and general manager, told The News on Wednesday morning. Iglesias, 24, went down during spring training with what, at the time, were deemed shin splints. Soon after, however, they were being referred to as shin fractures. Surgery wasn’t deemed necessary, but rest and rehabilitation have been — and that’s what Iglesias has been doing. But any glimmer of hope that he might find his way back to Detroit in 2014 is being shot down. “He is progressing as projected,” Dombrowski said. “But we do not think he will be ready at any point this season to play.” The Tigers’ biggest void is at the shortstop position, where Andrew Romine has struggled to hit with any consistency —and lately, has struggled defensively, as well. Danny Worth is a serviceable backup. So all eyes have been on Toledo, where Eugenio Suarez continues to rake, and where Hernan Perez fell just a double shy of the cycle Tuesday. But they’re both young — Suarez 22, Perez 23 — which is why Tigers brass might be more comfortable exploring the trade market leading up to the July 31 deadline. Iglesias, acquired from the Red Sox last July in a three-team trade that sent Avisail Garcia from the Tigers to White Sox and Jake Peavey from the White Sox to Red Sox, still is projected as Detroit’s shortstop of the future, despite shin issues that date back several years. So any trade would ideally be for a player whose contract expires at year’s end. Asdrubal Cabrera and Jimmy Rollins are two men who fit that description. Iglesias hit .303 with 109 games split between Boston and Detroit last year, and made one highlight play after another on defense, earning him a runner-up finish in the AL rookie of the year voting.
