DETROIT -- The Tigers held onto center fielder Alexis Gomez, outrighting the ex -Royal's contract to Triple-A Toledo on Friday. Gomez's contract was designated for assignment last week to make room on the 40 -man roster for utility infielder Ramon Martinez. That gave Gomez 10 days to be traded, released or outrighted to the minors unless another team claimed him o ff waivers. By outrighting him now, the Tigers dispensed of one possible move now instead o f potentially facing it later. Since Gomez was out of minor league options, he would've had to be designated for assignment to be sent to the minors out of Sp ring Training if he didn't make the Major League roster. Instead, he'll attend camp as a non-roster invitee as he tries to claim a spot as a reserve outfielde r. Gomez's roster situation was one reason the Tigers were able to claim him off w aivers from Kansas City last September. He went 8-for-29 with four RBIs in 13 g ames for the Royals last season after batting .251 with seven homers and 34 RBI s in 109 games at Triple-A Omaha.
