Urbina's mom case still unresolved

CARACAS, Venezuela -- The kidnapping case involving Maura Josefina Villareal, t
he mother of Tigers pitcher Ugueth Urbina, remains unresolved, despite official
s' optimism earlier this month that a breakthrough could come soon.
Venezuelan police say the latest reports of movement in the case, involving the
alleged discovery of another video of Villareal, have no basis in reality.
The video supposedly was sent by her captors.
Interior minister Jesse Chacon told reporters Nov. 9 that the investigation was
"well advanced." He said the authorities hoped to have "much happier informati
on" to report within a matter of days.
The minister indicated that police had recently come close to locating Urbina's
mother.
But when they arrived where they thought she was, "the lady had already been mo
ved from that place," Chacon said.
Villareal was kidnapped by armed men Sept. 1 and has not been seen since, even
though the Venezuelan equivalent of the FBI -- known as the CICPC, or "scientif
ic police" -- has said it knows the identity of her captors.
Press reports that a video of Villareal had been received, and that kidnappers
were asking for $15 million (later reduced to $6 million) were dismissed as ina
ccurate by commissioner Joel Rengifo, head of the CICPC kidnapping division.
But police chiefs did confirm that a letter, including "proof of life," had bee
n received.
They expressed optimism about the outcome, although they were concerned that th
e family was preparing to pay a substantial ransom.
Earlier this week, the Caracas daily El Universal reported that a fresh video h
ad been found in the bathroom of a neighborhood clinic near the beach resort of
Higuerote.
The discovery led to the arrest of a 28-year-old man who allegedly left the vid
eo in the bathroom.
But Higuerote police said the find was not a video but "a piece of paper," and
that the suspect had no link to the Villareal case.
Commissioner Wilfredo Patino of the CICPC office in Higuerote called the report
"totally false. This was a case of extortion involving a different woman, and
the person detained has nothing to do with Urbina's mother."
Rengifo of the kidnapping and extortion division could not be reached for comme
nt.
The Urbina family continues to maintain a low profile and has made no recent pu
blic comment in relation to the case.
Police say they will not release the names of the gang members they suspect to
be involved in the kidnapping for fear of compromising the investigation.
