According to a report from Carrie Muskat, the Cubs will retire number 31 on
May 3 in honor of Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins and future Hall of Famer
Greg Maddux.
The official announcement is expected on Wednesday.
The pitchers not only shared the same number while with the Cubs but they are
the only two pitchers in the history of the game with at least 3000
strikeouts and less than 1000 walks. Jenkins struck out 3192 batters in his
19 seasons with only 997 walks while Maddux sat down 3371 batters and issued
only 999 walks.
