Aramis Ramirez is usually pretty stoic.
The Cubs third baseman doesn't get too high or too low.
So what happened when he heard the news on Monday that the Cubs signed Alfonso
Soriano to an eight-year, $136 million deal a little more than a week after he
inked a five-year, $73 million deal?
"I jumped up and down," Ramirez admitted on Tuesday at a news conference at
Wrigley Field. "We're getting one of the great players in the game."
Cubs fans who saw the North Siders lose out to other teams in the bidding for
targeted, high-priced free agents such as Mike Hampton, Carlos Beltran and
Rafael Furcal over the years probably jumped up and down as well.
The Cubs committed more than $200 million to Ramirez and Soriano over a nine-
day stretch.
And with a possible $120 million-plus budget for payroll for 2007, the Cubs
still could be in the market for a top-level starting pitcher such as Barry
Zito or Jason Schmidt.
Because of the cash the Cubs are spending, some are comparing their offseason
flurry of activity -- it also included signing free-agent second baseman Mark
DeRosa, re-signing pitcher Kerry Wood and catcher Henry Blanco and trading
for pitcher Neal Cotts -- as being on par with the New York Yankees and Boston
Red Sox.
Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said the team is not spending the money
foolishly.
"The people we put large investments in are great, great players," Hendry said.
"I don't think there is anyone in the world who wouldn't want to have Alfonso
on the team or Derrek Lee (who signed a five-year, $65 million deal in April)
or Aramis. I think if anyone can afford them, they would pay those guys to be
on their team.
"I don't look at it as having nine guys in the lineup who are making double-
digit millions. But when you have those three guys on one ballclub ... that's
going to help us get a lot better."
Ramirez said the Cubs, who won 66 games and finished in last place in the
National League Central in 2006, are showing how serious they are about turning
things around.
"They are aggressive and that's what everybody is expecting," Ramirez said.
"We had a bad year last year. They are working on making the team better."
The Cubs may not make any more moves for a few weeks. They are expected to get
back to serious work during the winter meetings in Orlando, Fla., which begin
Dec. 4. At those meetings, the Cubs will search for starting pitching and
outfield bench help.
Meanwhile, a Cubs source said a downtown newspaper's report that talks with
former Thornwood star Cliff Floyd are heating up is inaccurate.
The left-handed-hitting Floyd, a free-agent left fielder who played for the New York Mets last season, is on the Cubs' radar, but the source said the North Siders have not yet reached the stage where they request medical information. Floyd has been oft-injured in his major league career.
