标题Girardi, Piniella, Brenly on Cubs' radar
时间Sun Oct 8 14:34:10 2006
In fact, finding Hendry at all in the coming days will be difficult as he
plays it low-key in his search for the man to replace Dusty Baker on the
Cubs bench
The agent for Joe Girardi was not available Wednesday, but this much is
known as the Cubs’ quest for the right manager begins to take shape:
All-Star
Hendry expects to speak today with Girardi and set up a meeting for
sometime next week. Cubs people have confirmed that they expect former
big-league manager Lou Piniella to become a candidate and that they
figure to meet “at the appropriate time,” according to one source.
In addition, Cubs broadcaster Bob Brenly, who may interview for the
vacant San Francisco Giants job, also may get an interview in the coming
days with the Cubs.
Those appear to be the three leading candidates. One name you can cross
off the list is Buck Showalter, fired Wednesday by the Texas Rangers.
Showalter sought the Cubs in 2002, and Hendry granted him an interview.
The Cubs don’t appear at all interested this time.
If Girardi, Piniella and Brenly are the “Big Three,” how does each
stack up as a manager? Here are brief scouting reports, based on
observations from several sources:
‧Girardi: Although the Florida Marlins, who fired him this week, have
painted Girardi as some sort of Showalter control freak, that’s not
necessarily the case.
Girardi certainly is “old school,” meaning that he’s a stickler for
doing things “right,” but the young players on the Marlins seemed
genuinely to like and respect him. He was “hands-on” in that he would
take the time to teach, going so far as to get down in the dirt with
his players.
Many observers describe him as “professional” in his dealings with
his players and the media. His New York Yankees-like rules (no facial
hair, for example) went over without incident with the young Marlins,
many of whom were just happy to “be here.”
Cubs fans may shudder in recollection of Baker and Don Baylor when they
hear that Girardi isn’t adverse to giving up an out in the first
inning by bunting. That goes against the new conventional wisdom,
which argues that outs are more valuable than bases.
But Girardi also seems big on doing things “right” as far as
fundamentals go, something the Cubs lacked under Baker.
Fundamentals
He doesn’t mind getting in players’ faces when they don’t do things
correctly. However, his generally positive nature couldn’t have hurt
and probably helped the Marlins this year.
Piniella: Sure, people have this image of the hot-headed Piniella
picking up bases and tossing them into the outfield when he becomes
overly upset at an umpire’s call.
Beneath the intense outward demeanor lies a highly prepared manager,
both friends and critics say.
Piniella appears to be adaptable, as his tenure in Seattle showed.
In the bandbox Kingdome, he let his big hitters hit. He was willing to
“make things happen” in spacious Safeco Field.
Piniella
Piniella can be impatient with pitchers, especially young ones, who
don’t throw strikes and he may be best served by a strong-willed
pitching coach.
He’s a stickler for preparation — his own and his players’
— and he has had a knack for knowing who needs a day off.
‧Brenly: He managed the Arizona Diamondbacks to the 2001 World Series
title and seemed to be the perfect antidote to the overly officious
Showalter, whom he replaced.
Brenly
Brenly often cringed audibly in the Cubs’ broadcast booth this year
over the team’s poor fundamental play. Even though he has few team
rules, he’s a stickler for playing the game “right.”
Brenly
但他其实是一个坚持要"Play the game right"的人
Underneath his friendly, laid-back and even shy demeanor lies a
fierce competitive nature.
He’ll put pressure on the defense, and friends and critics alike
have noted that he’s not afraid to manage by the seat of his pants
and by gut feeling.
Brenly effectively used bench coach in Bob Melvin, now the
Diamondbacks’manager, during his time in Arizona.
Brenly
Manager
One criticism was that he overworked relievers such as Oscar Villarreal
and Mike Koplove, but most managers hear that kind of criticism
sooner or later.
Mike Koplove
Brenly as a broadcaster
