Encarnacion was playing for Taiwan's CPBL's Macoto Cobras in 2005 when, on Octo
ber 3, he was found dead in his team dormitory room.
Earlier in the season, Encarnacion was briefly suspended for testing positive f
or amphetamines, leading to speculation of a drug-induced death, but autopsy re
ports are still pending.
After Encarnacion's death, the Cobras held a vigil for him that was attended by
a large number of fans. Since then, at Cobras games, whenever the Cobras neede
d a rally, the fans would chant Mario, Mario -- under the belief that Encarnaci
on's soul would help the team.
