Wednesday, Mar. 28, 2001 I don't speak Mandarin. So when I was asked if I'd
like to review CoCo Lee's latest album, "True Lover - You and Me," I thought,
'What's the use?' But I had just met CoCo for the first time, and although
her debut English album "Just No Other Way" didn't excite me, I found her
intriguing. So I took the CD.

That was six months ago, and "True Lover" is still one of the few CDs I
regularly listen to on my way to work. This CD, produced after her English
debut, highlights how much CoCo learned from recording in the U.S. She just
oozes confidence and creativity. I still remember thinking, 'My god, she's
got a helluva great voice coming from that tiny body!' the first time I
popped the CD in the player.
My favorite track, "Watch Out For Men" (No. 4), is the most sensual
mainstream R. and B. song I've heard since Boyz II Men released "Uhh Ahh" in
1991. Her genre, although she calls it R. and B., stretches beyond that to
include modern day rock songs, like track number 7, "Just Me," a bouncy
Sheryl Crow-like number sung to an electric guitar.
Unable to understand what she's singing about, I asked CoCo to describe the
lyrics. She calls them "life stories," and then, laughing, says, "There's a
lot of male bashing." She then admits "Sweet Baby" (Track 5) is about her own
life, focusing on her struggle to gain respect as a singer.
Like Destiny's Child's songs, CoCo's tracks, even though they are in
Mandarin, carry the same universal appeal. I know: I tested them out on my
sister.
