It conspired to come back and haunt them as Joseph Colley bundled the ball in from close range after a corner of our own was kept alive an hour in. An injury to our goalkeeper added to the challenging circumstances, as did a depleted squad, but Joe Edwards’s side worked tirelessly across the pitch and made several impressive blocks and tackles to preserve their lead and the points. Edwards reverted to the 3-5-2 system that served his side so well on their last away assignment in Blackburn, though injuries to Luke McCormick and Ethan Ampadu, plus the loan departures of Tammy Abraham and Charly Musonda, left the team shorter on options than they would have liked. Charlie Brown and Daishawn Redan came in to lead the line up front, while Richard Nartey joined Colley and captain Josh Grant in a back three protecting Marcin Bulka in goal. Juan Castillo and Tariq Lamptey returned to wing-back duties, with the central midfield comprising of Tariq Uwakwe, Billy Gilmour and George McEachran. The Blues were looking to bounce back from a first defeat of the season last week against Derby, while Swansea targeted their first three points in the fourth league outing of the new campaign and it was the hosts who created the clearest chances in an evenly matched opening. Liam Cullen had the game's first opportunity inside five minutes as he rose highest in the centre to meet a hanging cross from the left, though the wideman's header dropped comfortably wide of Bulka's far post. Edwards's side were working hard but left frustrated by an inability to break through a dogged Welsh opponent. When they advanced using width, Lamptey's delivery was too strong for Redan, while our attacking pair were contained well by Joe Lewis and Brandon Cooper at the heart of the defence. Down the other end, Cooper found space in the six-yard box and ought to have done better with his header following a well-delivered set-piece, though the ball flew over Bulka's bar. Our Polish stopper then saved routinely from Aaron Lewis's dipping free-kick and from Marco Dulca after the midfielder latched on to a forward pass to run in clear behind our defence. https://i.imgur.com/1Q1wHJI.jpg Josh Grant marshalls the Blues defence Much of Swansea's threat came when delivering balls into our box and Cullen's glancing header was a warning sign of that before Tyler Reid advanced unchecked down the right, the full-back only thwarted from a narrowing angle by a reaction save from Bulka. From the resulting corner, Cooper escaped from his marker to meet a smart delivery but the defender again failed to hit the target. The young Blues restarted much more brightly and Redan threatened moments in to the second period, though his rising left-footed drive was just too high to trouble Steven Benda in the Swans goal. Dulca then moved dangerously into the box from the left and forced Nartey into some impressive defending on the cover, the centre-back reading the threat and snuffing out the attack. The hosts were soon rueing their profligacy from set-pieces as Edwards's side broke the deadlock from a corner after an hour of play. They would have to do it with a change in between the sticks as a facial injury sustained by Bulka forced Jamie Cumming to replace him. The substitute keeper was untroubled as Lewis fired a bending free-kick too high but did have to make a key intervention to tip Cooper's powerful header over the bar as the clock ticked down. The development squad return to action at Aldershot in a fortnight's time as they host Leicester City on Sunday 16 September, kick-off 12noon.
