Everybody at the club has been deeply saddened by the loss of Wilkins, a much-loved figure throughout the football world and Chelsea to the core. Club chairman Buck, like so many others, spoke about Wilkins in glowing terms as he paid his own personal tribute. 'There are only three or four players where you can honestly say they had blue blood in their veins, and Ray was one of them,' he said. 'He spanned a number of generations because he started as a player when he was so young, he was captain so young and he was here for a decent time period. 'He was a wonderful guy. It's all happened so quickly, so suddenly, that it's really hard to get your thoughts together but he was always polite, always very enthusiastic about the club and about football. He was very helpful to younger players and he knew everyone's name. 'His ability to explain to non-football professionals like myself what was really happening was something I always found unbelievably exciting and enchanting, and I really appreciated him for the way he would take the time and patience to really explain to me what was happening on the field of play, and I'll miss that.'
