Checkatrade Trophy report: Exeter 1 Chelsea 3
Tue 28 Nov 2017
Our development squad came from behind to win in the Checkatrade Trophy
and book their place in the knockout round.
Reuben Reid headed Exeter in front but the hosts were ahead for less than
25 minutes as Callum Hudson-Odoi capitalised on some loose defending to
level the score by the break. Reece James headed against the woodwork
after the restart but made no mistake in the air with 20 minutes remaining
before Josh Grant sealed the points late on.
It means Joe Edwards's side finish as runners-up in Southern Group D and
face a trip MK Dons in the last-32 next Wednesday 6 December.
Edwards made four changes from the weekend defeat at the hands of PL2
leaders Liverpool with Marcin Bulka, Richard Nartey, Isaac Christie-Davies
and Kylian Hazard all returning to start in a reworked 3-4-2-1 system.
Bulka was protected by a back three consisting of Nartey, Trevoh Chalobah
and James, while Dujon Sterling and Grant lined up as wing-backs.
Hudson-Odoi netted an outstanding individual goal in our 3-1 reverse to
the Reds three days previously and the 17-year-old led the attack, with
support coming from Hazard and Christie-Davies. Ruben Sammut skippered the
side and partnered Jacob Maddox in central midfield.
The visitors enjoyed almost all of the early possession as they settled
swiftly into their crisp passing game but it was Exeter who took the lead
inside the opening seven minutes with their first attack of the evening.
Bulka had sprinted off his line to clear a long ball forward into touch
but Archie Collins picked up the throw-in and delivered an inviting cross
for Reid. The 29-year-old striker had found space between the central
defenders and had the simple task of guiding a downward header into the
bottom corner, beyond the desperate dive of our Polish goalkeeper.
An early goal for the Grecians was hardly likely to change the contest's
pattern of play and Edwards's side continued to probe without igniting a
creative spark in the final third. Their first opportunities of note came
with 20 minutes on the clock, Hazard doing well to reach Sterling's deep
cross but lacking the aerial accuracy to trouble James Hamon in the Exeter
goal.
Hudson-Odoi had fired our first effort at goal moments earlier, the lively
teenager's strike well blocked by a tracking defender, before he combined
neatly with Maddox to fashion a chance for the midfielder. The duo
exchanged a one-two and Maddox advanced centrally but his shot was weak
and aimed straight at Hamon.
The signs were positive for the visitors and Hudson-Odoi threatened again
after latching on to Hazard's slide-rule pass, though his left-footed
rising drive arrowed into the terraces behind the home goal. However,
there was no doubting the forward's finishing or eager anticipation on the
half-hour mark as he pounced to draw us level.
Craig Woodman, the defender 17 years Hudson-Odoi's senior, presented the
opportunity with a short header back to his goalkeeper and our number 70
was in no mood to let the Grecians off the hook. He got the first touch to
the loose ball eight yards out, slotted it through the legs of the
goalkeeper and then tucked his finish into the unguarded goal.
It might have been 2-1 to Chelsea by the break but for an impressive and
important fingertip save from Hamon. Hudson-Odoi's hassling again caused
problems for the home defenders and he stole possession from Jordan Storey
and quickly bore down on goal but was denied by Exeter's keeper standing
tall and clawing the ball from danger.
The hosts restarted brightly and enjoyed their best spell of the game as
first Chalobah had to cover following a long ball forward towards Reid and
then the striker saw a first-time volley bravely blocked.
Yet it was Edwards's side who went within inches of getting the game's
third goal as a short corner routine on the right paid dividends.
Hudson-Odoi turned provider again and swung in a centre that found the
unmarked James at the back post, though the defender's header struck the
woodwork from a difficult, narrow angle.
Alex Byrne's free-kick might have troubled Bulka further had a deflection
off the wall not taken the sting and power from the effort, while Reid
lacked composure in the 18-yard box midway through the second period and
fired over the crossbar from a promising position.
Our comeback was complete after 69 minutes and this time James made no
mistake with his close-range header. Hudson-Odoi added an assist to his
first-half goal, delivering into a dangerous area from the right and James
arrived on cue to power a header into the back of the net from the middle
of the box.
Edwards's side knew they were still relying on a favourable result in the
other group game but their part of the bargain was being delivered.
Substitute Taylor-Crossdale ought to have sealed the three points when he
raced clear down the right channel but his low drive flew inches wide of
the far post.
The Blues continued to battle bravely and were defensively sound against
their League Two opponents. The victory was assured with five minutes
remaining as the wing-backs combined to deliver a knockout blow, Sterling
providing the delivery from the right and Grant ghosting into space to
head beyond Hamon.
A late goal for Yeovil Town at Huish Park ensured the Blues, unbeaten in
this competition in 2017/18, advance as runners-up.
