FULHAM RESERVES 3 CHELSEA RESERVES 2 Chelsea's Reserves went down to their first defeat of the season away at Fulham on Tuesday night, despite a spirited display, not helped by the wrongful dismissal of Wayne Bridge after half an hour. Bridge will now be suspended for up to three first team matches, a further setback to his comeback after hip surgery over the summer. At the time of Bridge's dismissal, the score was locked at 1-1, but Chelsea came undon in the opening minutes of the second half, conceding two goals that should have been avoided. It wasn't the best start for the Blues side, and within 30 seconds Collins John broke through and drove towards goal, but his shot zipped just wide of Stuart Searle's right-hand post. Fulham opted to field a strong team, with Shefki Kuqi, on the bench on Saturday at Stamfrod Bridge, partnering John up front. They were joined by experienced goalkeeper Tony Warner. It was the young Dutchman who gave the hosts the lead ten minutes in when Chelsea's Carl Magnay failed to clear, and John was on hard to side foot towards the bottom corner. The shot, relatively tame, crept under Searle's five and into the net. Chelsea responded well, and Bridge had his first involvement in the game as he cut inside towards goal and struck powerfully, but Warner was able to divert the ball behind at his near post. Still though, it was promising signs as Bridge continues his journey towards full fitness. A quarter of an hour in, Chelsea were still being overrun by their more experienced opponents, but almost equalised with a fantastic flowing movement. After trickery from Sinclair, Stoch squared for Shaun Cummings who cleverly back-heeled towards goal, but Warner was alert enough to save. Lee Sawyer was forced off through injury shortly afterwards, and was replaced by young Spaniard Sergio Tejera. Slowly, the Blues gained the upper hand, and equalised through Miroslav Stoch, who continued his excellent start to the season. After 23 minutes, the young Slovak played a one-two with Cummings before firing an unstoppable low shot into Warner's bottom right corner. After 32 minutes disaster struck Bridge, looking for 90 minutes to help his match fitness, as he went in for a 50-50 on the left flank. Although his foot was high, Bridge made little contact with his tackle, but was inexplicably shown a straight red card, leaving the 10 remaining inexperienced players to play an hour on their own. It was a disappointing moment for Bridge, who was hoping to add to the 25 first team minutes he played at Hull last Wednesday. Anthony Grant was also booked for his protests, and was then lucky not to be sent off as he charged into a couple of tackles. From one foul, Fulham's free kick flew inches over the crossbar. In the 42nd minute, Adrian Leijer was booked for a foul on Cummings, which appeared far worse than the one Bridge committed only ten minutes earlier. Chelsea had matched their opponents, and often looked the better side, with Liam Bridcutt impressing from the centre of the field. The first half ended as it had begun, with John flashing a shot wide of Searle's post, and both sides were content to go in level. Luck was to sway back towards Fulham though, and early in the second half Leijer nodded home a deep corner after poor marking from the Blues. It could also be argued that Searle could have come to claim the ball. Moments afterwards and Kuqi flashed a header just wide, suggesting things were far from right in the Chelsea backline. Five minutes later and the deficit was doubled as Ishmael Ehui went through, and when Searle made a good parry from his shot, Kuqi was on hand to nod in the rebound. Just after the hour mark, Paul Clement, standing in for Brendan Rodgers, made changes, and without a recognised centre forward on the field, Scott Sinclair was played down the middle as Patrick van Aanholt came on down the left. Chelsea were still playing the better football, but lacked a cutting edge with which to hurt their more physical and direct opponents. It was reminiscent of the match between the two clubs' first teams on Saturday. Despite the possession, Chelsea were failing to create many chances, and were handed a huge slice of luck by the referee, when Scott Sinclair was adjudged to have been fouled after taking a shot. Sinclair took the kick himself, and expertly tucked it away, high to the goalkeeper's right, putting Chelsea back in the game, with 12 minutes remaining. It was his third reserve goal of the season. Sadly there was no equaliser, and so Chelsea's first reserve defeat of the season against our neighbours came after a spirited performance, with attacking opportunities limited following Bridge's dismissal. They were the major drawbacks, but solace can be found with another goal for Scott Sinclair, and an impressive first half display, and goal, from youngster Miroslav Stoch. The Blues will need to tighten the defence if they are to maintain the season's promising start.
