Giles Smith: Numbers Don't Add Up

Just three days to go and our columnist is still struggling to make some
sense out of Wembley seating capacity sums.
The first question anyone travelling to Wembley on Saturday needs to ask
themselves is, 'Do I remember where Wembley is?' It's been a long while,
after all.
Always keen to provide a public information service, this column would like
to point out, then, that Wembley is that out of town shopping centre to the
north of London. IKEA, Currys, Tesco - you know the one. If you get to
Watford, you've gone too far.
Younger readers should check a map if they're still not sure. And why would
they be? In the time it has taken to construct the new Wembley, and what with
the problems encountered in doing so, a generation has come of age for whom
the place might as well be Atlantis - somewhere talked about by their elders
in glowing, mythical terms, but nowhere you were ever likely to end up.
In this respect, the arch across the top of the new stadium comes in handy.
You can see it from miles off, in all sorts of places, and point it out to
people who, through no fault of their own, don't really believe in Wembley at
all.
Indeed, based on my own first-hand observations, I can confidently report
that proof of Wembley's existence is visible from a position well south of
Stamford Bridge on the Trinity Road red route at Wandsworth and also, even
more startlingly, at the point where the A3 narrows into two lanes just
before the Chessington turn off.
That doesn't mean you would necessarily want to set out for it on foot from
either of those places, however, so we continue to recommend overground train
services from Marylebone and the Metropolitan line from Baker Street.
Another crucial question to ask yourself before leaving the house this
weekend: 'Do I have a ticket?' Happily, a few more of us will be answering
'yes' after this morning's surprise fire sale of FA cast-offs. Nevertheless,
the measly size of the club's allocation for this match, and the
disappointment thereby inflicted on season ticket holders and ever-present
members is one of the season's most baffling and dismaying turn-ups.
I hate to rake up an old argument, but the FA spends seven years and 400
gazillion pounds building the biggest stadium in the country - the second
largest in Europe, in fact - and the competing teams in the FA Cup final end
up getting a smaller share of the tickets than they would have had if the
bulldozers had never gone in in the first place.
I don't know about you, but I'm struggling to equate this with progress.
Also, if fewer partisan fans in an atmosphere of sleep-inducing sterility was
the outcome the FA was looking to bring about, why not save the money and use
the Emirates?
And I do understand the argument about the FA Cup final being 'football's day
out' - that it's not meant to be entirely about partisan fans; that it's
meant to be a gathering for the whole community of football; and that hence
it only makes sense that a precious pair of tickets should end up going to
the treasurer of the Tiptree Bald Eagles playing in the Snug-U-Fit Loft
Insulation Over-35s league, division five.
I'm not entirely making this Bald Eagles thing up, by the way. A friend used
to play in an accountants' league for a side which was, by his own admission,
'almost certainly the worst football team in the world.' Yet they were
entitled to enter the ballot for FA Cup final tickets, and more often than
not a pair would duly arrive.
Being mainly Chelsea fans, the team applied in hope that it would turn out to
be Chelsea's season. Except that this was back in the days when Chelsea
routinely went out in round four to ShrewSuper Boyury, or similar. So
frequently the team would end up with two Cup final tickets on their hands
that nobody really wanted, and would frequently struggle to get rid of them.
That, sadly, is the story of FA Cup final tickets down the ages.
Even so, one comprehends entirely the realities, commercial and emotional, of
the FA's obligation to distribute the tickets between fans of the clubs,
corporate diners and upstanding members of the football community
representing Tiptree Bald Eagles. It's the proportions on this occasion that
look bizarre.
There were, after all, 90,000 seats to play with. If the competing clubs had
been allocated 35,000 tickets each, the balance might have seemed more
reasonable. As it is, the partisan fans on each side (25,000) are set to be
outnumbered at a rate approaching two to one by the combined might of the
representatives of Tiptree Bald Eagles and the prawn sandwich munchers
(40,000). And, accordingly, if you add the partisan fans of both sides
(50,000 in total out of 90,000), they will barely account for a majority on
the day.
You don't need to play for an accountants' football team to be able to do the
maths here. And you don't need to be a member of an accountants' football
team holding an unwanted pair of tickets to appreciate that it is
fundamentally mad.
