Make no mistake - Mourinho is the best thing that has ever happened to Chelsea Football Club and in the cauldron of the Mestalla on Tuesday night, he once more showed why. Ever since the Portuguese walked into Stamford Bridge and announced himself as the 'Special One', he has done everything possible to live up to his own hype. Granted, the former Porto coach has not been short on funds, but ask any Real Madrid or Inter Milan fan and they will tell you hundreds of millions of pounds do not necessarily just buy silverware. But Mourinho is a tactical genius. And so often when his players have needed inspiration from the bench, he has provided them with it. Not only with his substitutions, but with half-time team-talks that so often wake his side out of their slumber and propel them to a performance of real merit. One-nil down to Valencia, 2-1 on aggregate and with his team sliding out of the Champions League, Mourinho raced down the tunnel before the first half had ended to prepare his 15-minute briefing. “He wasn’t happy,” admitted John Terry, with a classic hint of footballer's understatement. “We were not good enough and we got a kick up the backside. We came out and dominated.” Mourinho withdrew the nervy Lassana Diarra and sent on Joe Cole, even though the England winger had previously played just 23 minutes of first-team football in 2007. It was inspired, and dominate they did. Michael Essien moved to right-back and Cole buzzed around the Valencia box, causing new problems with his quick feet and unpredictable movement. After just seven minutes, they were level. Valencia had just one shot of note in the entire second half. Only a save that will live long in the memory from Santiago Canizares prevented Michael Ballack from wrapping it up five minutes from the end. But then up popped Essien - yep, from right-back - to smash in at the death and confirm Mourinho's standing as currently the world's best manager. Rumour has it that Dutchman Guus Hiddink is being lined up by the Blues’ billionaire owner Roman Abramovich when Mourinho exits at the end of the season. Whatever Abramovich’s motives for being unhappy with his manager, he quickly needs to have a rethink. Few managers in the history of the game have been quite as adept as Mourinho at motivating their troops and turning a lost cause into a won game. And for those of us who follow English football religiously, he is the most constant source of entertainment in a sport that increasingly produces dour, cliche-prone individuals.
