Dear Jose (An Open Letter)
Tuesday November 14 2006
Dear Jose,
In response to the comments yesterday about the lack of vocal support for
your team, we'd like to offer the following response.
It was received from one of our regulars who puts into print some succinct
points with regard to the problems faced cheering on your side at Stamford
Bridge.
Jose, whilst appreciating your comments relating to the vocal support the
team receives from those of us that frequent the Matthew Harding End, you
should perhaps be aware that we are fast becoming an endangered species.
Little by little, we're being eroded by the over-zealous attitude of the
stewards. Game after game, ejections are being carried simply because, in
order to get the noise level cranked up, several patrons have taken to
standing up.
Now correct me if I'm wrong but in any other walk of life, singing is a
vocation that is carried out standing up. When was the last time you saw
an artiste sitting down to sing!
Occasionally, the risks we take are worth it. Others join in and the
stewards are powerless to take any action. However, we're always only a
whisker away from being invited beneath the stand for a chat.
Such a chat usually results in our season tickets being taken away or our
memberships declared null and void. With ticket prices at an all time
high, such action can be, to put it mildly, disappointing.
Occasionally, through no fault of our own, we find ourselves in other
areas of the ground. The ticket fiasco, against Barcelona, saw many of us
relocated to the Shed End.
If you're not aware of what happened then please ask at the Box Office but
just in case you are a little busy orchestrating our quadruple, I'll
enlighten you.
On the night of the Barcelona clash, the Matthew Harding End was declared
full due to several hundred people having obtained duplicate (and
triplicate tickets).
These were then subsequently used to gain entry to the Matthew Harding
Lower by several unscrupulous people. Finding the gates to our beloved end
blocked, several of us were forced to locate, as previously mentioned, to
the Shed Upper.
Here the problem of standing to sing was exaggerated with ejections
carried out almost at random.
Therefore, whilst we appreciate the problem of getting other areas of the
ground to sing, as well as our own end, please accept that we live in fear
of having, what are for most, their most prized possession confiscated.
Furthermore, perhaps you should ask why visiting supporters are allowed to
stand almost at will!
