They are joined in the 50-strong list for 2006 by Michael Ballack, Andriy Shevchenko, Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Frank Lampard, Claude Makelele and Arjen Robben to give Chelsea nine representatives, two more than last year and the highest by any club. Barcelona are next with eight. The nominations were announced in the magazine France Football and the name of the winner, decided by a panel of European journalists, will be unveiled on November 27. The highly prestigious and long-running award was initiated in 1956 with Stanley Matthews the first winner. The only footballer playing for an English club to have won since the 1970s was Michael Owen four years ago. In 2004, Shevchenko was named European Footballer of the Year but no player has yet to collect the trophy while at Chelsea, although Ruud Gullit and George Weah were also both named Europe's best at earlier stages in their careers. Last season, Frank Lampard came second behind Ronaldinho.
