Over two days of matches, the numbers were reduced from the 40 who had qualified during the Roadshows. There were emotional scenes as boys and their parents reacted to news that they had made it through to the next stage of the competition. Most striking was the image of Paul Magnay, jumping into the arms of his son, Carl, on hearing the news that he had made it through. But there tears, too, as others were given the heartbreaking news that they wouldn't be continuing in the competition, where the star prize is a professional contract at the Chelsea Academy. The weekend began with the 40 boys and their parents checking-in to a luxury hotel near Dorking in Surrey. Many had travelled hundreds of miles to take part and endured horrendous queues on the M25. Such was his determination not to give up his place, Tom Bird, a left-back from Basingstoke even cut-short his holiday in Tenerife. His decision was rewarded with a place in the final 14. There were several displays of great courage with the young hopefuls playing on through injury, such was their desire not to waste the opportunity. Frankie Warren, a 17 year-old midfielder, played on despite a suspected broken arm. And others suffered head and facial injuries. The Football Icon judges, Neil Bath, the Academy Manager, former Chelsea player Eddie Newton, and ex-Liverpool and England midfielder, Jamie Redknapp, described the overall standard as very impressive. The boys who have made it through will now have several weeks training at the Chelsea Academy. Once the Chelsea coaches have had a chance to assess their abilities, the Icon judges will decide each week just who stays or is released. The lucky 14 will also be moving into the Football Icon Mansion, where they will get a taste of the lifestyle of being a top footballer. The winner of the competition will be announced in December.
