Reaction: Ballack apologises all round

Post-match, following his 50th minute dismissal for a late challenge on
Mohamed Sissoko, a repentant Michael Ballack waited outside the Liverpool
dressing room to apologise to the Malian midfielder.
“It was a bad situation for me, I came in a bit late and I didn't want to
injure him. I have just seen him now and I have said sorry,” announced
the 30-year-old Germany captain, adding:
“It is my first straight red card in my career.”
“I said sorry to him, it was no problem, I like him in the game. There
was a situation in the first-half where I thought he had a foul for a
second yellow card and I said to him then, slowly, slowly.
“In the second-half these situations can happen, it was bad for me, the
team worked very hard after this and we went on to win the game. It wasn't
easy for them, and I said sorry to them, as it was important for us. We
wanted to challenge Man U for first place.
“It looked bad on TV and all I can say is sorry.”
His manager Jose Mourinho explained that as it was Ballack's first
straight red card in a long career, he was not angry with the midfielder.
“The rules are very clear, and the red card is a deserved red card.
Ballack arrives late, the ball is not there any more and he stamped on
Sissoko.”
Jose reflected on how the situation might have been different had Sissoko
received, in Mourinho's opinion, a deserved second yellow card in
first-half stoppage time from referee Mike Riley.
“First-half was a 50-50 game, very tight, no space to play, not many
chances and an incredible goal. But there was an incident that could kill
the game: if Sissoko sees the second yellow card, the game is over with
Chelsea leading 1-0 and playing with one player more.”
With our second-half performances this season being less than convincing,
it took a Herculean effort by the ten men to hang onto all three points.
“Forty-five minutes is a long, long time to play with ten men. It was
time to win, not to play beautiful football, not to score three or four
goals, it was time to get the three points.
“The team had unbelievable character. I loved to see the players doing
what they did: Lampard running miles, Maka, Essien the same. Sheva playing
wide on the right to help the team, Robben fighting hard, the goalkeeper
unbelievable.
“For the spirit, we deserved the happiness of getting the points.”
