The team returned from Gravesend and Northfleet FC's ground in Kent with a deserved win thanks to a Jimmy Smith free-kick four minutes from time. Earlier chances had come and gone but against more experienced opponents, superiority in the game was only surrendered for a short spell before the break. There were promising displays from some of the youngest players in the Chelsea side. One of them, 17 year-old centre-forward Ben Sahar won a free-kick out on the left as the game looked to be heading for stalemate. Smith, the Reserves' new captain this season, swung the ball over low with Chelsea defenders Mancienne and Pettigrew making near-post runs. The opponents were distracted and before anyone could react, the ball was in the net with Smith claiming the goal. A second win by a Chelsea side over a Charlton one in the last three days was assured. The Addicks' second string on this occasion contained Matt Holland, winner of over 40 Republic of Ireland caps while up front was the experienced Kevin Lisbie. There was also a place for Uruguayan international midfielder Omar Pouso who is on a season-long loan. Like their first team colleagues playing at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Charlton were under Chelsea pressure for the majority of the first-half. Scott Sinclair won the first Blues' corner with a clever dribble and although that set-piece didn't amount to much, the next attack just a minute later saw Fabio Ferreira and Sahar combining to set Smith up for a shot that was deflected wide. There was an early booking for Charlton's Gislason for a shirt tug on Smith and the Chelsea skipper continue to involve himself in all the notable early action by blasting a shot at keeper Andersen in the 11th minute. That came after a storming run forward from Ferreira on the left. Ferreira was not far away from playing Michael Woods in after the Portuguese flyer had attacked down the other flank. Midfielder Woods was making his reserve team debut aged just 16, benefiting from testing himself against players like Matt Holland and not looking overwhelmed. Charlton defender Aswad Thomas played with fire when pulling at Sahar's shirt near the penalty area but got away with it. Then his side broke their shackles for two efforts on goal. Lisbie shot from distance, Yves Ma Kalamabay up to the challenge with a good save, and then Pouso tried his luck from over 30 yards just past the half-hour mark but was off-target. Chelsea's young right-back Sam Hutchinson then showed good awareness to snuff out a Lisbie attack. Another flying Ma Kalambay save heralded the start of the second-half, this time keeping out Gislason but then Chelsea gained the upper hand again. A long punt forward by Mancienne allowed Smith the chance to outmuscle Tanksa but keeper Andersen blocked with his legs. Smith also saw a curling 66th minute free-kick saved. Sahar, whose all-round centre-forward play impressed on the Israeli Under 17 international's first start at this level, headed a free-kick on target but it proved saveable. Then left-back Ryan Bertrand powered forward, found Sahar for a lay-off but Sinclair stabbed his shot over when very well placed. That was the best chance that went begging and the closest miss followed soon after when Sahar opted for a path straight through the middle before his shot was deflected narrowly off-target. Fortunately, time remained for another chance via Smith's elusive free-kick. The results gives Chelsea Reserves a record this season of played two; won two; goals scored five; goals conceded none.
