Mourinho: That's not the way to do it away
Thursday, Aug 24, 2006
For the second season running, Jose Mourinho left the Riverside Stadium
wishing to blame nothing for defeat except his own players.
It had been a hard defeat to take. Unlike last season when Chelsea went
behind in the second minute on the way to a 3-0 loss, this time the visitors
held the upper hand until just under ten minutes to go before conceding the
winner with 90 minutes on the clock.
“Middlesbrough deserved to win. From me no complaints about the opponents,
about fair play, about the referee, no mistakes, no stupid penalties,”
Mourinho listed after the late capitulation.
“We cannot blame bad luck, we have to blame our own performance.”
It was a performance that had settled down well after a shaky opening and
had been rewarded with a goal. But in the second-half Chelsea only played
strongly after surrendering the lead to Pogatetz’s header. This especially
angered the boss.
“When a team can play from minute 80 to minute 90 like we did - challenging,
putting a lot of pressure on the opponent and almost winning the game again,
it is because we were able to do it,” he said. “But we didn’t do it before
that.
“For me it was the attitude. Before that we were just watching Middlesbrough
play, waiting for the final whistle, but football is 90 minutes, it is not 75.
Lampard could have scored the second goal when he hit the bar before they
scored but that was an isolated situation in the game. Overall, their attitude
was stronger than ours.”
Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate, basking in the glow of his first win,
wasn’t about to disagree with his opposite number’s assessment.
“We decided we needed to play a particular way, we needed to match Chelsea
in midfield and we started ever so well. We conceded a goal possibly against
the run of play and that knocked our belief a little, especially after what
happened at the weekend.”
Middlesbrough’s opening game had seen them on the wrong end of a turnaround,
newly-promoted Reading the victors.
“We said if we could stay in it until 15 to 20 minutes from the end then
anything can happen. We had players on the bench that could lift the crowd.”
One of those players was Mark Viduka, scorer of the winning goal who Southgate
praised for his attitude having initially been left out. He also thought
Yakubu threatened Chelsea all evening.
“It was just a good example of how you cannot play away from home,” decided
Mourinho as he continued his lament over the display. “Especially in this
country where there is always emotion around and the crowd with little things
can stimulate the home team.
“We were too passive, reacting just to the score. The point is we know why
we were champions twice and it was not with this attitude, that is for sure!”
