Mourinho, the hardest worker

Chelsea’s arrival in Los Angeles this week underlined how Jose Mourinho sets
himself a schedule above and beyond that of his players and staff in order to
prepare the team for action.
The squad left Gatwick on Wednesday just after 2pm on the 12 hour flight. So
arrival in LA was 2am Thursday in UK time, but it was still only 6pm
Wednesday in California.
A dinner at the Beverley Hills Hotel was provided, and everyone went to bed
between 11pm and 1am. Midnight local time was 8am Thursday UK time, so they
had been up around 24 hours.
Breakfast for the players was at 8am — or 4pm UK time. Many had found
sleeping difficult, waking hourly, or waking at around 4am and unable to
return to sleep. No-one felt dreadful, but no-one felt normal at breakfast.
Mourinho wasn’t at breakfast. He’d had his earlier, and with his Portuguese
coaching staff and some back-up, was already at the UCLA training camp,
laying out the pitches for training. All the balls, bibs and cones, all the
poles and hurdles, everything was being prepared meticulously.
It wasn’t just them. Club doctor Bryan English, kitman Stewart Bannister and
others were preparing their side of activity.
Breakfasted, the players left the hotel at 9am with Steve Clarke and Mick
McGiven looking after them. UCLA was a short coach ride away (between 15
minutes and almost an hour down Sunset Boulevard depending on LA traffic —
today it was 15 minutes), and when Andriy Shevchenko lined up for his first
Chelsea training session with the rest of the squad, everything was in place.
It was the open session for the media. By now, Mourinho’s methods have been
taken for granted. The session started at 10am and finished at 11.30am. He
ran it, walking around with a clipboard and stopwatch with everything moving
to his plan. He was constantly encouraging, motivating and demanding.
When the players left, walking passed a fenced off area for the media, they
were in demand. John Terry, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole were especially
surrounded. Shevchenko was whisked away as he was a couple of hours from his
press conference.
Because there was media representing people from all over the world, lots of
players were asked for interviews: Wayne Bridge, Didier Drogba, Geremi, Carlo
Cudicini…
but then Mourinho, almost last of all, left the pitch and almost rudely the
media left their interviews and surrounded him. So much of what happens with
journalists, photographers and film crews surrounding Mourinho is ‘rock’n’
roll’, so in this Hollywood/rock’n’roll city there was no reason to be
surprised. The cropped hair ‘ready for war’ story still had legs. The hair
had been shortened again before boarding the plane.
Rock 'n' Roll city
It was the same story in the afternoon. When the team arrived at 4.30pm —
12.30am Friday UK time — all the pitch was prepared. All the session was
prepared. It was a 90 minutes session precisely. This time it was closed to
the media, but the same organisation and principles were in place.
It really took until today, Friday, for the jet lag to subside and an air of
normality to return. But for Mourinho, normality had been self-enforced
immediately. As the players breakfasted, he and his staff were again away at
UCLA, preparing the pitches to his instructions, he with his clipboard and
drawn plans already having the session devised for the 90 minutes.
