Jose promises stars against Celtic
Tuesday, Jul 25, 2006 翻译:chealsejz
While there can be few Chelsea fans who remember the last time Celtic
visited Stamford Bridge, our manager has much fresher recollections of
facing the current champions of Scotland.
The year 1923 was the most recent occasion the Glasgow side played Chelsea
on our home turf. Eighty-years later they travelled further afield to
Seville to take on Porto in the UEFA Cup Final. It was a Porto side
coached by a young manager then little known outside his native Portugal.
“If I didn't die that game of a heart attack then no more problems in the
future,” smiles Jose Mourinho as he looks back on his first European
trophy. He has been speaking to Chelsea TV.
“I've played Champions League
Final, I've played big matches and I've won things with Chelsea, but it
was the most exciting game of my career.
“The game was amazing and the stadium was full of Scottish supporters. We
scored, they scored, we scored again, they scored again. We went to extra
time and in the end with everybody waiting for penalties, we scored the
winning goal which was an amazing goal.”
The deciding moment came five minutes from time when Derlei found the net.
Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira both played in the victorious Porto
side.
“I have great memories,” continues Mourinho.
“From that time I can say
I fell a bit in love with Celtic because the atmosphere was amazing and
the crowd was magnificent, the way they behaved with the Porto fans.
“I look forward to meeting Celtic again. They are a big club and they
have a good relationship with my country because they were European
Champions in Portugal many years ago and they play a UEFA Final against
Now Mourinho will be reacquainted with one of his favourite opposing sides
at the Bridge on August 9th and he has promised to field Chelsea's big
summer signings.
“I will use all the players to show the people the new squad we have and
because we don't have many matches to prepare the team, it is a game we
have to face seriously.
“I know it is a friendly and a few days later we have to play the
Community Shield but it is the first game at home and it is a big chance
for the fans to see the new boys — Shevchenko, Ballack and Kalou. I think
it could be a good game. If I can push people to give us a good welcome
and show they are behind us and they want success again, I will be very
pleased.”

Clarke: Celtic mustn't break our winning habit
Tuesday, Jul 25, 2006
Chelsea pre-season games at Stamford Bridge have been few and far between
in recent years. Assistant manager Steve Clarke has particular reason to
remember one as he looks forward to the next against Celtic.
Almost exactly a decade earlier than the forthcoming visit by Gordon
Strachan's side Chelsea played PSV Eindhoven in a benefit match for
Clarke. It was a well-deserved and well-supported occasion for a player
who is fifth in our all-time appearance list.
“We don't play many pre-season friendlies at the Bridge,” he agrees.
“There has often seemed to be work going on at the ground over the
pre-season to stop it and when you are a top team you tend to get
invitations to go to other places.
“I was fortunate enough to get a pre-season date for my testimonial.
Dennis Wise managed to get one a few years after mine and Paul Elliott got
one the year before for his benefit match, so there has been the odd
occasion. Mine was Luca Vialli's first game at the ground for Chelsea.”
With Andriy Shevchenko set to take his Stamford Bridge bow against Celtic
on August 9th, comparisons can be made between two former scoring stars of
Serie A beginning their London adventures in similar games.
Ex-Scottish international Clarke believes the opponents this time will be
especially determined to win.
“I am sure it will be billed as the Battle of Britain - the Scottish
champions versus the English champions. Whenever there is an
England-Scotland issue there is always a bit more edge to the match. But I
think Celtic play every game to win. When you are a top club you do that
anyway. We are the same, we want to win every game we play.
“It is a pre-season friendly, we have to bear that in mind, the
performance and the well-being of both sets of players is the most
important thing, but you never want to lose and certainly being at
Stamford Bridge, we don't want to lose. I know the mentality at Celtic
Park is they like to win every game.”
It is a desire that is backed by the Glasgow club's record. They lost just
three league games last season. At the weekend they beat Everton 1-0 at
Parkhead in a friendly. In the team was the familiar name of Jiri Jarosik.
“It will be good to see Jiri again,” says Clarke.
“He did a good job
for us in the short spell he was here. He moved on to Birmingham where he
had a bit of an in-and-out season, a few injuries and they got relegated.
He scored some important goals but not important enough to keep them in
the division. He has decided to take on a new challenge in Scottish
football and everybody wishes him well.
“But the game will also be the chance to see some of our new players
before the season starts,” points out Clarke.
“It is important for us to
keep winning at Stamford Bridge. We had fantastic record there last season
and we want to start off that way this year.”
