Makelele, who at 33 is Chelsea's most experienced player, announced his retirement from the balcony of a hotel in Paris according the French sports newspaper L'Equipe. The announcement was made to supporters who had gathered to welcome back the team despite their defeat by Italy. Makelele had previously given up the international game in September 2004 but returned 11 months later along with Lilian Thuram and Zinedine Zidane in an attempt to revive a flagging World Cup qualification campaign. The effect was clearly positive!
