Chelsea's creator remembered as descendant drops by
Tuesday, Jul 04, 2006
Chelsea was reminded of our roots on Monday when Sue Mears, the great
granddaughter of the club's founder paid us a visit.
Henry Augustus Mears (pictured below) formed Chelsea Football Club in 1905
to play in the Stamford Bridge stadium that he owned and had redeveloped.

Although relatives of Mears remained in control until shortly before Ken
Bates purchased Chelsea in 1982, his direct descendants left England when
his son emigrated to New Zealand.
Monday was the first time Sue Mears had flown over to see Stamford Bridge.
She spent time in the Centenary Museum, viewing the exhibits about her
grandfather and surveying all that he had begun.

Chelsea author and historian Rick Glanvill talked her through the full
extent of her family's involvement and showed photographs. A visit to Gus
Mears' grave in the nearby Brompton Cemetery is on the her schedule.
“It is overwhelming,” she told Chelsea TV.
“You get goose pimples
thinking that Great Grandfather started it. You could almost cry because
it is a lot of pride.
“We have a few cuttings but very little of anything because Great
Grandfather started it and then the family left for New Zealand, or at
least Grandfather did, and no-one has been back.
“It is time some of the family came back and being the new century, I
figured we needed to bring Gus' name up.”

But you saved me! As difficult and as frustrating as it's been sometimes,
your goddamn strict rationalism and science have saved me a thousand times
over! You've kept me honest, made me a whole person. I owe you everything,
Scully, and you owe me nothing. I don't know if I wanna do this alone...
I don't even know if I can... and
if I quit now, they win.
