The 22 year-old striker has signed a four-year contract with the Upton Park club. A product of the Chelsea youth system, Cole first blossomed in the 2001/2 season when he scored a combined 37 goals for the youth and reserve teams and was named Chelsea Young Player of the Year. Aged 18, he was further rewarded with his maiden first team start in the April of that season away at Middlesbrough, having made his debut as a substitute two weeks earlier. He responded with a fine headed goal. An even better solo strike followed on the opening day of the following season at Charlton, probably his finest Chelsea goal, and he spent the middle part of the campaign on loan at Wolves. He also became an England Under 21 international and would later captain the side. His 19 appearances and six goals at that level are club record totals.
