http://www.chelseafc.com/article.asp?hlid=398960 Two more Blues through as Round of 16 ends Wednesday, Jun 28, 2006 An impressive 11 out of the 15 Chelsea players who started the World Cup will remain in Germany for the quarter-final stage after a France team containing Claude Makelele and William Gallas progressed on Tuesday night. The Chelsea pair completed the full 90 minutes of a 3-1 win over Spain in Hanover. Gallas played in central defence and matched the pace of Fernando Torres well while Makelele negated the influence of Raul in characteristic fashion. The Spanish captain was substituted nine minutes into the second-half. http://www.chelseafc.com/Images/-NEWS/GallasMakeleleSpain.jpg
It was a much improved France performance compared with their stuttering group stage campaign. Makelele and Gallas have played every second of their team's campaign — a record matched by John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ricardo Carvalho amongst the Chelsea clan in Germany. Michael Essien's World Cup is over however. His suspension left him powerless to do anything to prevent Ghana's 3-0 defeat by Brazil. Ballack had not trained on Sunday having picked up a foot problem but was later declared fit. He was joined in missing Tuesday's session by striker Miloslav Klose but a spokesman for the German soccer association (DFB) said on Tuesday: “Ballack is doing a full workout today but due to fitness reasons and regeneration methods without a ball. With Klose it's the exact same thing. It has nothing to do with injuries or anything like that. The boys are doing special individual training programmes today.” Germany play Argentina on Friday, a team they have twice faced in the last 18 months, once in a friendly and once in the Confederations Cup. Both games ended 2-2 but in both games Ballack and Klose were absent. by Paul Mason -------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/article.asp?hlid=399252 Makelele: There's plenty left in French legs Thursday, Jun 29, 2006 With France having at last found form in the World Cup, Claude Makelele identifies the age of the French squad as a strength rather than a weakness. France has the oldest average age of any country in the tournament but such know-how in the side was crucial to the win over Spain according to the 33 year-old midfielder, who personally had an influential game. “In these type of games, you need experience,” Makelele said.“We had spoken about it prior to the game. We had to advise and keep the youngsters in the team calm while we also knew that we, the most experienced, had to take responsibility.” France play Brazil on Saturday evening in a re-match of the 1998 World Cup Final. Makelele was not part of the triumphant squad eight years ago. “We have the capacity to win against anyone,” he says, looking forward. “Of course Brazil are still favourites to win the tournament but we have to continue to play our game and, if we do so, we can battle against anyone. “We still have plenty of football left in our legs and we will continue to use our experience to our advantage.” http://www.chelseafc.com/Images/-NEWS/MakeleleFrance.jpg

The names in question are Joe Cole and Luis Figo. According to FIFA's official statistics, Chelsea's England star has been illegally halted 18 times in his four games, a total only surpassed by Figo's 19. http://www.chelseafc.com/Images/-NEWS/ColeEnglandFouled.jpg
Frank Lampard and Andriy Shevchenko both feature in the top 20 — they are eighth equal having drawn 12 fouls apiece. There is a notable contrast between Cole and Figo when it comes to fair tackles suffered. Whereas Figo tops the chart again with 27, Cole has proved far harder to dispossess fairly. He's way down the list with nine tackles. Frank Lampard, still looking for his first goal, is currently the World Cup's most frequent shot taker. He has fired for goal 21 times, three more than Germany's Miloslav Klose. Lampard is second in terms of shots on target with nine to Klose's 11. The German has four goals. by Paul Mason -------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/article.asp?hlid=399502 No room for error with Sheva warns World Cup opponent Friday, Jun 30, 2006 Ahead of Friday's World Cup quarter-finals, Italy's star defender has described Andriy Shevchenko as close to perfect for a striker. Italy take on Shevchenko's Ukraine in the later of the day's two games but Alessandro Nesta is unlikely to be fit for the Azzurri. The centre-back who has 77 caps to his name knows the talents of Chelsea's new striker well. The two played the last four seasons together at Milan and Nesta wouldn't fancy facing the game in anything less than full working order. “In order to limit Shevchenko you have to be 100 per cent,” he has said in the build-up. “You have to keep close to him for 90 minutes. There is no room for errors because he has almost no defects.” Even without Nesta, Shevchenko will reacquaint himself with former team-mates in Hamburg. Milan's Gennaro Gattuso and Andrea Pirlo have been regulars for Italy, as has Alberto Gilardino who played alongside Sheva in attack last season. Another Milan strike colleague, Filippo Inzaghi, has been on the bench. “Italy are one of the great footballing nations and so they will be favourites,” is Shevchenko's belief ahead of the game. He played seven seasons in Serie A. “We want to put Italy out. We are a difficult team to beat and this is a very important game for us as well as them. I played a lot in Italy and have many friends there and I'm very comfortable with them. I'll probably think about all that before the match.” Italy versus Ukraine kicks-off at 8pm UK time. Four hours earlier in Berlin, Germany begin their quarter-final against Argentina. Chelsea involvement centres around three-goal Hernan Crespo and Michael Ballack, yet to find the net despite a succession of highly influential displays. Middlesbrough-bound Robert Huth remained on the German bench in the last match. “We are not afraid, even though the opponent is Argentina who besides Brazil have been the best team in this tournament,” said Ballack as Germany prepare for a re-match of the 1986 Final. “After our most recent performances we do not need to hide ourselves. The team is in very confident mood and we know we have a big chance to defeat them. “Playing well does not suffice this time out. We want to reach the next round. We have the hunger to play three more matches and that is why our chances are 60-40. We are not worried.” by Paul Mason -------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://bbs.qieerxi.com/viewthread.php?tid=43190&extra=page%3D1 Lampard set to be fit Friday, Jun 30, 2006 翻译:水之哀伤 德国方面消息,先前传说兰帕德将由於伤势,而可能错过本周六英格兰与葡萄牙 的世界盃淘汰赛的传闻可能是虚惊一场。 前日晚媒体普遍报道这名蓝军副队长在周四训练中弄伤了踝关节,现在只能边治 疗边进行跑步训练。後者至今为止在本届世界盃英格兰的比赛中全勤。 http://www.chelseafc.com/Images/-NEWS/LampardEcuador.jpg
但是今天(周五)早上又有进一步的报导传来,英足总官方发言人这样说:“我 和弗兰克谈过,他感觉良好,马上就可以参加正式训练了。” by Paul Mason -------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/article.asp?hlid=399592 Klinsmann: Ballack yet to peak Friday, Jun 30, 2006 In his role as the German national manager, Jurgen Klinsmann has been keeping a close eye on his captain Michael Ballack for the past two years. He believes Chelsea are set to enjoy performances even better than those being put in by the player in the World Cup. “He has made a major step in his development in the last two years and there is still a lot more to come from Michael,” reckons Klinsmann. “He is a leader on the field with what he does playing-wise. But also behind the scenes he is of tremendous importance. He is talking to the younger players and points out mistakes.” Germany open the World Cup quarter-finals against Argentina at 4pm Friday, UK time. by Paul Mason -- Carefree, wherever we may be We are the famous CFC! --
