Ballack and Crespo into the Quarter Finals
Saturday, Jun 24, 2006

England boys into last eight

It's Riccy rather than Robbie to face England

Sheva looks to make history
Monday, Jun 26, 2006
Chelsea's World Cup interest today (Monday) is centred on record-signing
Andriy Shevchenko as Ukraine take on Switzerland in the evening kick-off.
It's been a down and up experience for Shevchenko so far in Ukraine's
first World Cup. After a horrendous 4-0 drubbing by Spain in the opening
game, he netted in a 4-0 recovery against Saudi Arabia and scored the
penalty winner against Tunisia that sent his team into the knockout stage.
He has been speaking ahead of tonight's game.
“We always kept our belief despite the terrible defeat. It's a hugely
important achievement for Ukrainian football that we have got into the
next round,” he said.
“If the team shows heart then with our fans behind
us we can go further.”

Ballack given fitness all clear
Monday, Jun 26, 2006
Germany have discounted the possibility that captain Michael Ballack may
miss their match against Argentina through injury.
Doubts were raised over the participation of Chelsea's new midfielder when
he missed a Sunday training session. A foot problem had flared up during
the defeat of Sweden the day before with assistant coach Oliver Bierhoff
reporting:
“He has a slight foot problem, which we are looking into.”
On Monday afternoon however, Germany's manager Jurgen Klinsmann announced
that the injury has healed and all is well. Germany play in the first
quarter-final on Friday in Berlin.

Shevchenko's Germany adventure continues despite missed kick
Tuesday, Jun 27, 2006
Andriy Shevchenko became the ninth Chelsea player to reach the last eight
stage of the World Cup even though he failed to find the net in either
open play or the decisive shoot-out against Switzerland on Monday evening.
Chelsea's new star striker was unfortunate not to start the scoring in the
first-half with a brave downward header that bounced up onto the bar, one
of few incidents in a desperately uneventful game in Cologne.
Extra-time brought no goals and when penalties began, Shevchenko, who has
both scored and missed decisive spot kicks in Champions League Final
deciders, saw his effort saved. That was the first penalty taken but when
Swizterland failed with their first three and the next three Ukraine
players didn't, the World Cup newcomers went through.

On Tuesday, Claude Makelele, William Gallas and Michael Essien will be the
final Chelsea players to discover if they join the successful nine
although Essien is suspended for Ghana's game against Brazil. France play
Spain.
