Kenyon sets Euro agenda
Tuesday, May 23, 2006 翻译:fall_ark
In the second part of his wide-ranging interview on Chelsea TV, chief
executive Peter Kenyon has broadened the debate to encompass Europe —
including Chelsea's standing within it, the Champions League and the
scandal engulfing Italian football.
On the subject of Europe's premier club competition, Kenyon has confirmed
that the desire to secure a trophy that has so far eluded Chelsea burns
bright.
“I have just come back from the holy grail of all cup competitions, the
Champions League Final, and that is definitely on our agenda, but we have
seen how difficult it is to progress in that,” he said.
“It is the holy grail for everybody, certainly all the top clubs. I was
at Milan recently and the six trophies are all lined-up in their
boardroom. To get one in our boardroom would be nice.
“But it is not at any cost,” he pointed out.
“You can't afford to bank
everything on winning it because it is a cup competition and we have seen
what impact the draw has on that. You have to start with the domestic
league being the really important competition because it gets you back
into the Champions League for the season after. We are starting to build a
good record of automatic qualification which is crucial.”
“We have come off of back-to-back titles and we have established
ourselves as a top team. I travel Europe a lot and there is a lot respect
for what we have achieved here, both in football and business credentials,
and our role within football.”
Despite Chelsea's position as English champions for a second season-in-a-
row, we will again find ourselves not one of the eight top seeds for next
season's Champions League group draw. Jose Mourinho has publicly
questioned the seeding method and Kenyon does not rule out a change in the
future.
“I am vice-president on the UEFA club board for European football and I
have just spent two days there with all the major clubs. One of the issues
at the moment is the Champions League format from 2009 onwards.
“The whole seeding mechanism and the way you build up points for it is a
constant debate and I know Jose has expressed his views at the elite
coaches' forum. There is a lot of good dialogue and nothing is being left
unturned - whether the competition has to stay at 32 clubs or more,
whether there are two group stages or one, how the last 16 is decided.
“We play in the best domestic league and with the Champions League we
have the chance to play in the best cup competition. The first thing you
have got to do is protect them. We have to make sure what we try to do to
move them forwards doesn't move them backwards.
“Some coaches support Jose's view and some don't but we are always
looking to move the game forward in every aspect.”
For football to stand any chance of progressing, or even maintaining its
current status, Kenyon is adamant there can be no repeat of the
match-fixing allegations that have hit Juventus and are threatening to
drag in other top clubs from Serie A.
“It is critically important for the authorities. What has gone on in
Italy, there is no room for. Everybody is looking for quick and harsh
decisions to be taken.
“What keeps this game as it is, is that we all pick our team two days
before the match and we all analyse the game to death after until the next
game. If you think that is being somehow manufactured or interfered with,
that is what drives fans away. It also drives sponsors and television away.
There is no room for it and it has got to be stamped out.
……)”
“I think in the UK we might not always be happy with refereeing decisions
but I think the issues that are being approached in Italy don't exist,”
he added.
“Our issue is how can we in a game that is faster than anywhere else, and
is analysed more times than anywhere else due to the quality of media,
ensure that our referees are properly equipped — whether it's by training
and fitness, simplifying some of the rules or through technology.
“It might be just technology on the goal-line but it takes the pressure
of another decision off. Players have got to play their part, everybody
has got to play their part. It is not just a Chelsea issue.”
