Hurrell, a 17 year-old left-back, triumphed over 5,000 original trialists in the first series of Football Icon last autumn to win a professional contract with Chelsea. In a healthy justification of the project's aims, Hurrell had not previously enjoyed so much as a trial with a professional club before applying to take part. By the end of the season he had made ten appearances for Chelsea's youth team and had trained with the first team on a few occasions. Now the player, who is incidentally a life-long Chelsea fan, has been given a fresh one-year deal and encourages all youngsters with a similar ambition to follow him and have a go at Football Icon 2. “Just apply,” urged Hurrell at the Stamford Bridge launch on Friday. “It is a once in a lifetime opportunity. It is a hard job but it is worth it to play for the club I support. “When I first started to play at the youth team level it was hard to fit in because I wasn't used to training every day like they are, and it is high class at Chelsea like you would expect. Gradually over time I fitted in. “Towards the end of the season, training with my heroes of a year ago was amazing. I struggled because it is much faster but they tried to help me along.” Hurrell's opportunity was the result of a selection process that saw him one of 40 players spotted at the three roadshows held across the country. Gradually the 40 were reduced down to just one, the progress shown each week on Sky One. Football Icon 2 will be bigger and better. Chelsea's business affairs director Paul Smith explains. “Last year was a resounding success at every level — the quality of programming, the audience numbers and the fact that Chelsea managed to secure the services of a very talented youngster. “It gave the opportunity to 5,000 aspiring youngsters to come and see if they were good enough to play for Chelsea. “Chelsea has again co-operated with Sky One and the results will be shown this autumn. It is extending from eight to ten programmes and the roadshow will also be broadening its range. This year we are replacing Birmingham with Newcastle plus a new fourth venue - Edinburgh. “Boys who are born between 1st September 1988 and 1st January 1990 can already register. We expect 10,000 boys to be appraised — double last year — but only one will secure the contract again.” Jose Mourinho has given his backing for the new series. “It is important in social terms to motivate kids. We are speaking around 10,000 and kids need dreams. “They have the dreams but maybe some of them are afraid to fight for their dreams and this shows that they can do it. Sam is a great example for them. I am not saying he is already a star because he isn't and he knows he isn't.
