Reaction: Decisions for once a laughing matter 翻译:fall_ark
Wednesday, May 03, 2006
Chelsea had sealed the Premiership title three days before succumbing to a
Tuesday evening defeat against Blackburn Rovers. After having not one, not
two, but three strong penalty claims rejected at Ewood Park, it was a good
job the race was already over according to Jose Mourinho.
The championship-winning manager believed that second-half trips on Shaun
Wright-Phillips and Frank Lampard plus a shirt-pulling incident involving
Hernan Crespo should have provided more than enough chances from the
penalty spot to make up a half-time deficit. But the match officials
didn't see it that way.
As Mourinho admitted after the game, he wouldn't have been quite so
philosophical over the outcome had the lost points been of greater
consequence.
“I am laughing now because I am champion, but if today I was not champion,
I think it would be the end of my career in England because I would be
suspended forever!” he said, painting a picture of how he would have
reacted.
“The strongest claim was the Crespo one - absolutely ridiculous! The
referee had people between him and Crespo but the linesman was in front.
“I have not enough fingers to count the penalties we haven't had this
season - but I still believe the refereeing in England is not bad. They
are honest people. I just think they look at Chelsea with different eyes.
“I spoke to the referee after the game but laughing; in a good way. I was
saying to the players before the game that if today you get a red card,
you will be suspended for next season. So after what I was saying to the
players, it is stupid if I do something now that creates me a problem for
the future. I prefer to laugh and forget.
“I was laughing because I am champion but I can imagine what people in
Newcastle are saying.”
By mentioning the Geordies, Mourinho was referring to the battle for UEFA
Cup places. Blackburn, with their three points against Chelsea have
secured qualification. He just wished that in his eyes, the result that
had earned them a passport to Europe had not been tainted.
“I remember last season when we played them at Stamford Bridge, they were
bottom of the league and one-and-a half years later they are in the UEFA
Cup. Because they deserve in my opinion so much to be in the UEFA Cup,
they don't deserve to finish the job this way. They deserve in a
different way.”
As indicated prior to the game, the time had come to rest some of the legs
that covered so many miles on the way to the title, even if William Gallas
was again needed in defence and Frank Lampard was a familiar presence in
midfield.
“People can say Chelsea came with a different team but we had the same
motivation and Blackburn did their job. They played a good first-half. In
the second-half they just defended and we did a very good second half.”
Despite the rare taste of defeat and the controversy surrounding it, there
was still a moment of humour before Mourinho left this corner of
Lancashire for the journey back to London.
Asked about supposed bids of £10 million on eBay for one of the medals he
so famously threw to the Stamford Bridge crowd on Saturday, he responded:
“I don't think the bid is true for a start and if it is true, I sell the
medal from last season for sure!”
