Mick McGiven's young team rarely looked like scoring. Southampton struggled too in a sterile first-half but the visitors, the second-placed team in the table, roused themselves for a brief period of second-half pressure that brought the breakthrough. Chelsea could have taken the lead within two minutes, Jimmy Smith heading Ryan Bertrand's corner back across the area but Scott Sinclair headed over. Little did they know then it would be their best chance of the game. It took a headed clearance by Bertrand, making his second start, to keep out a header from Cranie after 12 minutes while at the other end, Jimmy Smith hit a dipping volley five years wide just past the half-hour mark. But it was a first-half of much midfield toil without much penalty area action. Chelsea should have been punished by Southampton's left midfielder Tim Sparv approaching the break after gifting possession in a dangerous area but unchallenged, he shot hopelessly wide. Neither keeper had dirtied their gloves before the half-time whistle was blown. That changed within a minute of the restart when Michael Poke in the Saints' goal reacted well to keep out a Chelsea header from a corner. An hour into the game, the Blues came within a whisker of conceding. Andrew Surman took a free-kick from 25 yards out and curled it beyond the reach of Yves Ma Kalambay and onto the bar. Shortly after Cedric Baseya struck a low bouncing shot just wide for the visitors to continue the best passage of play by either side. Chelsea responded when Sinclair played James Simmonds away down the left for a deep cross that Jimmy Smith opted to chest down rather than attempt what would have been a difficult volley. He was closed down fast and the chance had gone. The Southampton goal came on 71 minutes. A ball forward by Cranie caught Chelsea napping at the back when it was flicked on by Simon Gillet. Ma Kalambay got a hand to Baseya's well-struck shot from the edge of the area but could not keep it out. David Prutton on a comeback from injury, tried to double the lead with an outrageously ambitious shot from out on the right touchline and was not a million miles away. Chelsea were finding it difficult to respond to the deficit. The odd classy touch apart, Lassana Diarra was quiet and Fabio Ferreira could not reproduce the exciting running that had been on display in his first few reserve outings There was a late chance for substitute Shaun Cummings to salvage something from the game when the ball broke to him on the right of the area but tackled as he shot, he skewed his attempt wide. This Chelsea team that contained four players in the 16-17 year-old age group could not complain about the result.
