Tales of Friday evening
Sunday, Apr 16, 2006
Both Jose Mourinho and Frank Lampard have recounted the minutes they
learned that Chelsea's title rivals had slipped up badly against doomed
Sunderland.
The Chelsea squad had already arrived in the north-west in preparation
for the Saturday lunchtime kick-off at Bolton. There had been plenty of
optimistic talk out of Old Trafford and Friday night was Man United's
chance to close the gap. They did — by a solitary point.
“We were in a hotel in Manchester, full of Man United supporters but no
television with PremPlus,” explained Mourinho.
“The first I knew the
score was at half-time because we had a meeting before that. When you
know the score is 0-0 at half-time, from that moment you know let's wait,
let's see what happens. When we knew the result, I cannot hide we were
happy.
PremPlus。”
“I was getting the score on my phone,” Lampard revealed to Smooth FM
102.2.
“In the last five minutes I was sure it was going to be typical
Man U and they were going to score.
“By then I was on the phone speaking to someone who was watching it,
waiting for van Nistelrooy to bang one in. It was always in our hands
but when your rivals slip up, you have to make the most of it. That's
the sign of champions and we did that against Bolton.”

Reaction: Mourinho waits to jump and sing
Saturday, Apr 15, 2006
It was the defensive quartet in his side that Jose Mourinho selected for
special praise after they laid the foundation for a win that took Chelsea
ever closer to the title.
“We didn't play especially well in our building-up but it is difficult
against a team like Bolton,” admitted a relaxed Chelsea boss after the
2-0 win at the Reebok.
“But we had very good defensive control of the game. Our defensive line
pushed up all the time and never played close to our defensive third. We
had big personalities — John Terry and William Gallas with great
performances. Geremi and Del Horno closed the space very well inside
against the second balls so defensive we played very, very well.”
The contribution his backs made to the game was increased still further
when Mourinho gave his verdict on Chelsea's unclear first goal — a
header that had Drogba and Terry celebrating like the scorer.
“I think both touched the ball but it looks to me like the most important
header was John Terry.”
Bolton manager Sam Allardyce was more impressed by the way the ball
reached whoever scored.
“I can't blame my defence when the ball in is
that good. It was undefendable and Frank Lampard is capable of delivering
those. Then Frankie boy has done us again with the second and he doesn't
miss those,” Allardyce added as he reflected on a second-half strike that
brought back memories of last season's game at the venue.
Mourinho returned to the subject of the player who, in his opinion netted
the opener.
“I think Terry is the best central defender in the world. Last year and
this year he has had two incredible seasons. He is the one who scores more
goals, he is the best in the air, he is the captain, shows always a great
attitude and touchwood, is never injured.
“He is quick for the body he has; normally players of that size are not
quick. He is equally comfortable in a defence of four or three and he can
pass the ball.”
Mourinho was prepared to admit the game had not been without the odd
concern.
“We had that little bit of luck in the right moment when Vaz Te hit the
post. He was face-to-face with the keeper. Normally they go 1-0 up and
the game could be different.
“We scored the second goal in a great moment for us. After that we closed
the door, went back to a 4-3-3 and I closed the wings with Joe on one side
and Arjen on the other. We had always defensive control of the game so it
looks comfortable. But it stays in my mind the Portuguese boy's chance
that could have made it much more difficult for us.”
Instead Chelsea stand just four points or one victory over Man United away
from recording back-to-back titles, thanks to this win and the unexpected
failure of our rivals to beat Sunderland on Friday.
“I'm very confident but I am not jumping and I am not singing,” insisted
Mourinho.
“I don't like the players to be too happy and from this moment
I think about the next game.
“I expected to go home with the same seven points lead we had 24 hours
ago. If we had done that I would have been happy. What happened yesterday
is part of football and we have to be sure that on Monday it doesn't
happen the same to us.
“The situation is very good. I can guess every Chelsea supporter is
jumping and singing we are champions again - but not me. Not yet!”

Reaction: Lampard joy over record-breaker
Saturday, Apr 15, 2006
Bolton's Reebok Stadium is carving out a very special place in the heart
of Frank Lampard.
Last season at the venue his double strike signed, sealed and delivered
the championship to Chelsea. This year his second-half goal equalled his
tally of 19 from last season and set a new Premiership record of 15
league goals in a season by a midfielder.
“I am very proud,” he smiled as he talked to Chelsea's official radio
partner Smooth FM 102.2 after the game.
“The holders of the record were Paul Scholes and Robert Pires, two
fantastic players who I have great respect for. A few years ago when I
wasn't so prolific, I used to wish I could score as many goals as they
did, so to beat their record is something I'm very proud of.
“I hadn't scored for seven games. You set your standards and if you
don't score people ask questions. So it was very pleasing to score and
win today.
“Now the focus will stay there. The aim is the double. We have a big game
on Monday and then a huge game against a very good team in the semi-final
that will be a big battle. Our focus is on both fronts and we won't let
up.”

But you saved me! As difficult and as frustrating as it's been sometimes,
your goddamn strict rationalism and science have saved me a thousand times
over! You've kept me honest, made me a whole person. I owe you everything,
Scully, and you owe me nothing. I don't know if I wanna do this alone...
I don't even know if I can... and
if I quit now, they win.
