Chelsea's reserve side fielded seven first year trainees during the course of the game against Palace but still recorded a fourth win in five games. The winning goal came after only 11 minutes. Chelsea had already probed away down the right through Fabio Ferreira and when the young Portuguese winger sent over a slightly deflected left foot cross, Jimmy Smith's header was saved but Phil Younghusband was on hand to turn it in. The close range effort was a welcome strike for the centre-forward. Short of goals of late, this was his fifth of the season. Lenny Pidgeley was lucky to escape five minutes later when an excursion outside his area went wrong but Adrian Pettigrew was on hand to prevent bustling former Man City striker Jon Macken from capitalising. A better side of the Chelsea keeper's game was seen just moments later when he stretched to tip over a looping Grabban header. Macken had two attempts for Palace before the half-hour was completed, driving wide both times with Pidgeley extended, but the striker would not last the half. Injury forced him off five minutes before the interval. Chelsea had competed well since the goal and enjoyed a healthy share of possession but ended the half without another meaningful attempt on goal. Having already introduced Jack Cork to the midfield prior to kick-off following the late withdrawal of Anthony Grant, the number of 16 or 17 year-olds in Mick McGiven's Chelsea side was increased still further when Jimmy Smith went lame and came off at half-time. Portuguese Under 17 international Ricardo Fernandes joined the midfield for his third reserve appearance. Chelsea were the first to threaten after the break, Scott Sinclair ending an attack he had started with a typical run from his own half by shooting well over. But Palace were to enjoy a much better second-half. Grabban nodded just past the near-post after Dayton crossed in a swift home team move and the match became a grind for Chelsea. Making headway in attack was proving difficult but a chance opened up for Fernandes from substitute Shaun Cummings' cross five minutes from time but the shot was badly miscued. The Chelsea rearguard stood firm although there was a late scare with the win almost in touching distance. It took a Pidgeley double save to firstly keep out a header from Charlie Sheringham, son of a well-known bearer of the same surname and from the follow-up shot, Pidgeley denied the dangerous Gabbon. With that alert over, a backline that was shielded by Cork on his sixth appearance and contained 16 year-old Sam Hutchinson on his debut at right-back could congratulate themselves on having secured the Reserves' fifth straight clean sheet.
