Reaction: Mourinho - I had to bring something new
Sunday, Mar 19, 2006
Jose Mourinho's analysis of Chelsea's third Premiership defeat of
the season and the first top flight loss at Craven Cottage for 46 years
centred around three big moments in the game.
While the furore surrounding the sending-off of William Gallas had
the manager predicting his club would be singled out and he had a clear
idea why Didier Drogba was not awarded a second-half goal, it was the
early tactical switch that was afforded the longest explanation.
“Normally when we concede an early goal, our team has an immediate
reaction. This time I was watching minute after minute and there was no
change in intensity and pace,” he said regretfully.
“So I thought I had
to bring something new to the game.”
That something was the introduction of Drogba and Damien Duff for
Shaun Wright-Phillips and Joe Cole as early as the 25th minute. The team
shape shifted from 4-3-3 to mirror Fulham's diamond.
“Chelsea changed very early and tried to match us up in midfield
which is a complement really,” said Fulham manager Chris Coleman,
delighted at what he believed was his greatest managerial moment.
Coleman explained that the influential Steed Malbranque had been
given licence to roam when Fulham were in possession and was told to sit
on Claude Makelele when they didn't, the intention being to force Chelsea
to knock long balls forward.
“I am happy with the change. I am happy with what Duff and Drogba
brought to the game,” Mourinho insisted, also revealing that Ricardo
Carvalho was preferred to Robert Huth second-half as the Portuguese
international is more adapted to playing in a back-three.
“The team improved a lot. The point is not Shaun or Joe playing badly,
the point was the team playing badly. I thought we needed to play with two
players up, Crespo and Drogba, and I had to make up my mind. Normally I
make changes at half-time but I saw no reaction from my team so I had to
make the change.
“In the first 30 minutes we were very poor and Fulham deserved to be
in front but the last hour, especially the last 45 minutes, we dominated
and we created and we deserved a different result. If we got the 1-1 I
could imagine we win the game, but we didn't.”
For more than a few seconds everybody in the ground believed Chelsea
had brought the scores level when Drogba slotted in on 58 minutes with
Fulham keeper Mark Crossley nowhere. That was until the officials
conferred and chalked off the goal.
“I have seen it on TV and I know it was a handball, no doubts about
that,” admitted Mourinho.
“But the referee did not see it and gave no
goal and the linesman didn't see and he gave no goal. They couldn't resist
the pressure of the Fulham players and that is a problem.”
Coleman had some sympathy. “I saw the handball from where I was but
how the linesman saw it I'm not sure. I can understand Chelsea's
frustration that it was taken away from them. It happened to us last year
when we had a penalty against Arsenal that was taken away when their
players protested.”
It was suggested to the Chelsea boss that his side may be brought to
task for similarly pressuring referee Mike Dean at the time of the Gallas
red card. Mindful of the FA charge slapped on Chelsea after a recent game,
Mourinho was not about to disagree.
“For Chelsea always! For Chelsea sure we will see in similar
situations one measure for Chelsea and for the other teams, a different
measure. No doubts about it. At West Brom v Chelsea I saw the final proof.
Bryan Robson is Bryan Robson and Jose Mourinho is Jose Mourinho. We are
not the same.”
Mourinho declined to comment on the actual incident that led to
Gallas' first Chelsea dismissal, his position some distance away denying a
view of it.
Instead he expressed a touch of gladness amongst all the
disappointment that in his opinion Fulham would be staying up. Mourinho
and Coleman have frequently expressed admiration for each other's work.
On his own team, the for-once-beaten manager concluded:
“I prefer to
stay with the second-half in my mind. I prefer to stay with the
second-half to try to persuade players that is the way to start from the
first minute.”
