Mourinho backs Chelsea to play the pressure game
Monday, Mar 06, 2006
Jose Mourinho believes there is only so much he can do to prepare his
team for a packed Camp Nou and a Champions League tie that will take one
of Chelsea's all-time great performances to turn in his side's favour.
As ever, training has been carefully thought out and the pre-match
briefings will be all-inclusive. But at 7-45pm London time on Tuesday
evening, responsibility is handed over to the eleven players in blue.
“It depends a lot on the players,”the Chelsea manager confirmed when
asked how he can arm them to cope with an intense occasion ahead.
“Yesterday when I was the first one to leave the airport, I knew what
I was doing. After that the players were received without any kind of
pressure. Today I left the hotel two or three minutes earlier than the
players so the nice guys, they follow me,” he added, referring to a
hostile reception committee that has followed the squad on the visit so
far.
“Tomorrow, all I can do is go onto the pitch before the warm-up and
try to take a little but the good feelings the crowd has and make it a bit
easier for the players. After the whistle there is nothing I can do. But I
believe we have players with experience and they can handle it. Some react
better than others and there is nothing I can do about it.”
On the big issue over the fitness of Frank Lampard, Mourinho, speaking
shortly before Chelsea trained on Barcelona's pitch, left the question open.
“If he trains normally and finishes the session then he is good. If
he is not training well or not intense or leaving early then he is not fit
and he has no chance to play.”
The good news soon after was the sight of the midfield dynamo still
running strongly after many of his team-mates had headed off for the
showers.
The Lampard decision apart, Mourinho had hinted that rather than a
simple case of Drogba or Crespo as the central striker up front when the
game kicks-off, he has considered the option of both.
Exactly how his team will go about the task of overcoming the
scoreline deficit, whether it be by patient counter-attack, an all-out
blitz or another method, will depend a lot on how Barcelona go about
defending the advantage.
“They are winning 2-1 at half-time, they are in a situation where I
believe they wouldn't expect to be and sometime in those situations, you
change a little bit in relation to the result you have,” Mourinho
explained.
“At the moment we don't know the way they will approach the
game.”
When challenged over whether he had worked out a way to contain
Lionel Messi since the first-leg, the Chelsea manager responded in pointed
fashion.
“The best way to stop Messi I believe, is to have 11 players on the
pitch, double marking him. With ten players, this is not possible.”
Finally Mourinho had words for the referee, on this occasion Markus
Merk, who the spotlight will no doubt fall upon as it did Terje Hauge in
the first leg.
“Before the game I always think positively. I always believe in
fairness and truth. You never hear me say I don't like a referee before
the game. I never say he is coming to do us wrong. I believe the ref can
perform well and do best to create a clean situation for both teams.”

But you saved me! As difficult and as frustrating as it's been sometimes,
your goddamn strict rationalism and science have saved me a thousand times
over! You've kept me honest, made me a whole person. I owe you everything,
Scully, and you owe me nothing. I don't know if I wanna do this alone...
I don't even know if I can... and
if I quit now, they win.
