The biggest day of our lives
February 20, 2006
By Phil Parkinson
WHAT A DAY. What an experience. We took a team worth more than £200 million
right to the limit. We were 12 minutes from an historic draw; we were 12
minutes from forcing a replay at Layer Road. That’s just how close it was.
Inevitably,
there will be a few regrets. That we couldn’t force a second
game, that we couldn’t hold on to the lead handed to us by Ricardo
Carvalho’s first-half own goal.
But they are minor regrets, tiny glitches, after what was a fantastic day —
in
fact,
a fantastic week — for myself, my staff, my players, the directors,
the club and all the magnificent supporters who never stopped singing.
We left our hotel in Hertfordshire yesterday in good spirits, relaxed almost,
but I wanted to keep our minds focused and on the job in hand. We wanted to
have a go, we wanted to show what we could do, but also with an air of caution.
Yes, we had done some talking, but I wanted us to walk the walk as well. And I
think we did.
I didn’t want us to look amateurish. We were there to put on a performance —
and
show what Coca-Cola League One is all about — and I felt sure there was
no way we would freeze on the big stage in front of the live cameras and a
40,000 sell-out crowd. I cannot be more proud of the way my players conducted
themselves, on and off the pitch.
Talking of which, the “beach” is not as bad as it probably looks on TV. OK,
there is no grass, but it is flat and you can still pass the ball. I would
not offer that as an excuse for our defeat, not at all. And I don’t see why
Barcelona should worry when they have to play on it in the Champions League
on Wednesday, either.
Steve Clarke, the Chelsea assistant manager, invited the lads into the home
dressing-room after the match and allowed them to swap shirts. That was a
lovely gesture. The Chelsea shirts were soaked but they have a spare one each
and all of our lads got one. Again, that demonstrates the gulf between the
clubs. We don’t even have a spare set of away kit because the suppliers have
run out of material.
The dream is over but I reckon we left our mark, none more so than
Lori Nice,
our pretty masseuse, who certainly made an impression with the Chelsea boys.
Some of them said she should be working at Stamford Bridge, which, if I’m not
mistaken, could constitute an illegal approach. Our lawyers are looking into
it!
