Chelsea Reserves 0 Arsenal Reserves 0
Monday, Feb 13, 2006
For the second time in the season this all-London reserve clash ended
scoreless but it was no bore-draw. A bright match was watched by a big
crowd who enjoyed seeing several Chelsea first-team squad players in action.
Two well-matched teams produced an even contest, both manufacturing
chances without working the goalkeepers hard. For Chelsea,
Paulo Ferreira
and Carlton Cole both boosted their fitness with an important 90 minutes of
high tempo action. Maniche managed just over an hour and impressed while
the influential Lassana Diarra came off with quarter-of-an-hour remaining
when he appeared to be struck down by cramp.
The evening started with a silence in remembrance of the late Ron
Greenwood who had been both a Chelsea player and an Arsenal coach.
Arsenal constructed the first chance of the game, Lupoli wrong-footing
Ferreira and crossing dangerously from the left but just out of reach of
his attacking team-mates.
On nine minutes it was Chelsea's turn to whip a good ball over — Jonas
Elmer supplying Cole who headed narrowly wide. After a period of sustained
Arsenal possession that followed, Chelsea broke free and it was Cole at the
end of the move again. The England Under 21 international was picked out
well by Ferreira from the back and although the first touch was good, his
shot was once more just off-target. Arsenal went straight down the other end
were Lupoli took the opportunityto lob Yves Ma Kalambay but he too placed
the ball wide.
Chelsea were forced into an early change. Phil Younghusband, who had
been struggling for some minutes with an ankle problem, was replaced by
James Simmonds as the left sided attacker in a front three also compromising
Cole and Scott Sinclair.
Bendter headed a corner wide for the visitors but then Cole twice saw
shots blocked for Chelsea, the first after a smart interchange of passes
with Hollands.
Chelsea closed the first-half with a decent 15 minutes of pressure.
Lupoli once more went for the difficult root of chipping 6' 5" Ma Kalambay
who stretched and caught Arsenal's last attack of the half. Maniche, set-up
by Cole, struck a shot that was always swinging away from goal to complete
the first period. The Portuguese international midfielder had been a
constantly available presence on the park.
The second-half was a tighter affair than the first. It took 18 minutes
for the first save Ma Kalambay catching a Bendter effort in acrobatic style.
For Chelsea, Simmonds rolled a shot wide after combining with substitute
Jimmy Smith down the right. Having lost out in midfield for a time following
the loss of the energetic Diarra and Maniche, Chelsea again finished the
game the stronger.
With eight minutes remaining Arsenal rode their luck as two Scott
Sinclair shots were blocked on the line, the first inadvertently by Carlton
Cole, the second, after the ball had rebounded back to the 16 year-old, by
Arsenal centre-back Sean Kelly. It was the closest either team came to
breaking through.
It took some tenacious tackling from the Blues' centre-back pair
Pettigrew and the especially impressive Mancienne to keep Arsenal's last
foray forward at bay.
A Chelsea corner in stoppage time was headed clear but returned by
Simmonds for Jimmy Smith to shoot into the arms of Mart Poom. There was one
final chance when Sinclair skipped past the Arsenal keeper but from a tight
angle out wide, he struck the side-netting.
There were no bookings in a game played in a good spirit. The referee
had been the young linesman at the centre of the offside controversies in
Chelsea's recent first-team win over Liverpool.
A crowd of 4099 applauded both teams from the Aldershot pitch.
