Chelsea Football Club has teamed up with Premiership sponsors Barclays, the Football Foundation and the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham (LBHF) to rejuvenate the stadium in White City, London. Following a ￡600,000 cash injection from the Barclays Spaces for Sports scheme and the Football Foundation, derelict areas within the stadium complex have now been transformed into a full size multi-sports pitch and warm-up area. Chelsea and LBHF (the borough within which Stamford Bridge is located) have also provided funding to build five-a-side courts next to the main pitch. The new facilities will ensure a range of activities, including football, rugby and hockey, for the local community in one of the borough's most deprived areas. The project will also receive a further ￡45,000 from Barclays to ensure the sustainability of the site, plus kit and equipment worth ￡5,000. Local children joined Terry, Wright-Phillips and England rugby World Cup hero Will Greenwood MBE to take part in coaching sessions in football and rugby to mark the opening of the site for public use. The new site will reach over 165,000 people in the surrounding area. Peter Kenyon said: "The Linford Christie Stadium project is a great example of how Chelsea, sponsors like Barclays, the Football Foundation and the local council can come together as partners to benefit the community. Chelsea is totally committed to promoting sport and fitness and this new pitch will provide a much needed multi-sports facility for the area." John Terry added: “It's very important that children have good facilities to play sport on. When I was growing up in London it would have been great to have a pitch like this. Chelsea and its players are committed to helping the local community, and children in particular.” Chelsea's Football in the Community coaches will be running new coaching initiatives on the site as well as continuing their extensive work in other areas of London and Surrey. Chelsea has become more actively involved in the local Hammersmith and Fulham community in the last 18 months. The club funds breakfast clubs in five local schools, providing a healthy breakfast for 160 children a day. Chelsea will also be providing the kit and other funding for LBHF's London Youth Games team in July, for the second year running.
