Reaction: Two managers laughing, two penalties denied, two points dropped
Thursday, Feb 02, 2006
Most people will think it nice to hear rival Premiership managers
finding so much in common. Most people, but not this evening's referee Rob
Styles.
Newspapers had reported the Chelsea boss's pre-match pat on the back
for Styles, who rang up to apologise for not awarding a penalty when
Ulysses de la Cruz fouled Didier Drogba here last season. After tonight,
if the managers had their way, the Waterlooville official would have
another couple of confessions to make on the old dog and bone.
On what David O'Leary conceded was a “diabolical” Villa Park pitch,
John Terry appeared to handle the ball in his area in the first half, and
in the last few minutes Arjen Robben looked to have suckered Jlloyd Samuel
into tripping him.
“I thought there were two penalties to be honest,” offered O'Leary.
“Ours was blatant and I thought they should have had a penalty with
Jlloyd on Robben in the second half. To me it looked a pen.”
Jose Mourinho was, typically, more expansive.
“I'm not happy with
the referee,” he said.
“I know it was a penalty against us also but I
would prefer that given, and that we have a penalty at the end.
“In football is not the law of the compensation: ‘Because I make a
mistake I'm going to make a lot of mistakes in the second half for the
other side'. He's not a bad referee, but with Chelsea he's amazing. Here
last year, the penalty on Drogba, at Highbury penalty on Drogba, tonight
penalty on Robben,
“We have a problem. Can you believe a team like Chelsea cannot have a
penalty for so many consecutive weeks? Zat Knight for Fulham, he goes like
that [here Mourinho swung his arm like a tennis serve] — no penalty.
Almost broken leg Drogba — no penalty. Arsenal, Drogba [bundled by Jens
Lehmann], no penalty. Clear situations, no penalty.
“I gave an interview for the BBC on my birthday saying referees in
England are fantastic, honest people. I don't change my mind in one week.
But you go some places where it's so easy to get a penalty.
“I hope next season no Mr Styles in this stadium.”
Villa Park remains the only Premiership ground where Mourinho's man
are yet to register a win. The manager wasn't unhappy with the result,
which after scores elsewhere increased Chelsea's lead to 15 points.
“I think Aston Villa give us a difficult game,” he admitted.
“Sometimes you don't get a result because you don't play well enough,
sometimes because the opponent gives you a very good game. That was the
game tonight: they tried to win from the first minute.”
The Portuguese could be forgiven for hoping Cameroon dump Ivory Coast
out of the African Cup of Nations on Saturday so that his absent star
striker can return as soon as possible and reinvigorate the Blues.
“We miss Didier Drogba,” Mourinho conceded.
“Crespo is doing very
well, also Carlton Cole is doing very well, positive for us. But Drogba
has a presence in the box, is strong, tall, a fighter. Crespo and Drogba
can give us something different.”
O'Leary was delighted with the performance of his team — now beaten
only twice since November — but not the point gained by Luke Moore's
bundled equaliser: “I thought it was the least we deserved,” he said.
“We got right into them from the start. The only thing we did wrong was
concede a very silly goal. It was lethal finishing [by Robben] but a poor
goal for us. I always think the games between us are close. It was the
same here last year.”
He was impressed with Chelsea's resolve: “To win a league
championship it's not about the spectacular, it's about being consistent
and when you're not playing well still getting something out of a game.
That's how you win championships.”
The two bosses, in such harmony after the match, were seen to share
what appeared a very good joke during it. O'Leary claimed it was a
non-football matter, a reference to something amusing that happened when
their families had met. “I enjoy Jose,” he said. “We have a laugh
before the game and speak a lot.”
At last Jose read something differently:
“I was talking about his
assistant,” he smiled.
“He [Roy Aitken] is the most noisy guy I've ever
seen! So noisy! But nice guy. I'm going up to have a drink now.”
