Reaction: Jose - "We wanted extra time: the domination was amazing"
Saturday, Jan 28, 2006
Having watched his side respond to an insipid first half and his
tactical switches to produce a barnstorming second 45 performance, Jose
Mourinho had first to fend off suggestions of complacency.
“I don't think we were complacent,” he frowned.
“In the first half
we controlled the game, had more possession.” First-time starter Maniche,
Frank Lampard and Claude Makelele, he ventured, had combined well until
James McFadden's uncontested header from an unprotected cross.
“It was a
goal out of context,” the manager protested.
“I cannot believe it has
happened to us again.”
He wasn't too happy with the response from his team either:
“The
pain of conceding a goal, they felt it too much,” he said.
The second half was a different matter. Chelsea had practised a
diamond midfield all week, but it had failed to produce and was ditched
at the interval. Once the substitutes Damien Duff and Carlton Cole came on
to shift the momentum in favour of attack, it was one-way traffic.
“We knew there wasn't extra time today,” said the Portuguese,
“but
we wanted extra time: the domination was amazing. We played well, we
created chances, we scored — we should have scored more.” Hernan Crespo
missed several good openings that he would normally exploit ruthlessly.
“Playing with three defenders and sometimes six or seven in attack is
a risk. You never know if the goal would come. The important thing was the
emotional control. It's important never to panic and not to feel you're
out of the competition,” said Mourinho.
With a clear penalty for handball by Nuno Valente denied, immediately
after Frank Lampard had equalised late in the game substitute Robert Huth
restored the defensive equilibrium. It always looked like going to a
replay after that, but Mourinho praised Carlton Cole (so injured he wanted
to come off despite all three replacements being used) for helping ensure
that remained the case.
His manager ordered him to get back out there.
“I prefer to play
with ten and a half than with ten men,” the Portuguese explained.
“And
to be fair the ‘half’, he heads the ball away defending a free kick.
But the way they [Everton] played and the way they fought it was also a
result they could have [deserved].”
David Moyes bemoaned the lack of players at his disposal and praised
his patched-up team's effort. “For long periods it looked like we were
going to contain them,” he suggested. “Chelsea started better than us
then in the second half of the first half we dominated the game.
“Anybody who's managed against Chelsea will tell you that you can't
just go out there and play your own game. Their rotation of midfield
players was terrific and it's very difficult to stay with them.”
So to a replay on Wednesday February 8 at Stamford Bridge.. The
Chelsea boss was asked if he regretted the extra game in a critical
period.
“No problem to play after Liverpool and before Barcelona,” he
shrugged.
“I prefer the draw and have the game at home.”

But you saved me! As difficult and as frustrating as it's been sometimes,
your goddamn strict rationalism and science have saved me a thousand times
over! You've kept me honest, made me a whole person. I owe you everything,
Scully, and you owe me nothing. I don't know if I wanna do this alone...
I don't even know if I can... and
if I quit now, they win.
