Chelsea ready for improved Everton says Clarke
Friday, Jan 27, 2006
When Chelsea faced Everton at Goodison Park in October, it was on the
back of just two wins for the home side in 12 games. Everton welcome
Chelsea for Saturday's FA Cup clash having won five and drawn one of their
last six. Assistant manager Steve Clarke is expecting a game no harder or
no easier than the first.
“We knew when we went up there in the League it was going to be
difficult,” admits Clarke, reflecting on the game that saw Chelsea first
drop points this season.
“They had a difficult start but they have
recovered from it. They have worked hard and it was a credit to their
squad and management team that they have turned it around. So we expect
another difficult game, no question.”
Chelsea drew 1-1 in the Premiership encounter, ending a run of ten
straight wins. This result Clarke believes gave Everton a small platform
on which to build.
“If you look back to last season, it was looking good for them. They
had a great season with virtually the same squad of players so from the
outside looking in, you could see that there wasn't that much wrong. A few
things had gone against them but you knew if they kept together, they
would turn it around which is what they have done.”
Clarke dismisses flatly any suggestion that Everton's supposed
battling qualities had anything to do with Chelsea failing to triumph in
the earlier game. He fully expects Chelsea to have the physical
requirements necessary to make the FA Cup fifth round at the first time of
asking.
“The FA Cup means everything to us,” he insists.
“Obviously we are
fighting for the Premiership but we want to win a domestic cup as well.
Going out the Carling Cup has just made the FA Cup an even bigger
competition for us. It is up there with the rest - the Premiership and the
Champions League. We want to win all three.”
Didier Drogba and Geremi remain unavailable. Their respective African
Nations campaigns will be prolonged at least to the quarter-finals next
week.
Their absence generates “mixed emotions” according to Clarke.
“You
are delighted for the boys themselves that they have qualified for the
next stage. If they are doing well it means they will come back in a good
frame of mind.”
Ricardo Carvalho is also absent for the trip to Everton. He will
serve a one-match ban for his red card last weekend. Arjen Robben returns
after suspension.
With a heavy week of fixtures coming up including a trip to Aston
Villa midweek and an important home game with Liverpool next Sunday, the
full available squad travelled to Merseyside on Friday afternoon.

Clarke: We can battle
Saturday, Jan 28, 2006
Chelsea assistant manager Steve Clarke has promised that Everton will
be mistaken if they believe their opponents can be out-muscled in the
weekend's all-Premiership FA Cup clash.
Inevitably in the build-up to the game, Everton striker James
Beattie's comments after the 1-1 draw at Goodison back in the autumn have
been revived. Back then the scorer of his side's winner over Arsenal last
weekend suggested Chelsea had found difficulties in coping with physical
methods.
“They have physical players and we have physical players,” points
out Clarke in response.
“It can be a physical game but if they want it to
be a technical game, we can handle that as well.
“We coped the last game. We didn't drop points because of their
physical approach. We weren't out-muscled, we weren't out-fought. That
would be paying a big disservice to John Terry, Robert Huth, Michael
Essien and Didier Drogba. We have players who can look after themselves.
“The one thing we have to do differently from the earlier game is
start better,” reckons the Chelsea coach. “We gave them the momentum at
the start of the game.
“By Everton's reaction at the end, you could see what it meant to
them to take a point off Chelsea. We have to make sure that our ambition
to win the FA Cup is greater than their ambition to beat Chelsea on
Saturday.”
