Eidur ready to pull the strings as Charlton call again
Friday, Jan 20, 2006
Depending on your point of view about penalty shoot-outs, you can
argue that Sunday's opposition Charlton are the only team to leave
Stamford Bridge with a win during Jose Mourinho's reign.
While some will say that Charlton only recorded a draw back in
October and then progressed to the next round of the Carling Cup on
penalties, others consider Chelsea were beaten that night despite the
score reading 1-1 after 120 minutes.
Either way, Eidur Gudjohnsen, who made his 250th appearance last
weekend, reports that his team-mates have put the game to the back of
their minds.
“I don't think there is any feeling of revenge or any talk like
that,” he says.
“We just want to keep going as we are in the League and
it is the chance of another three points to maintain the gap between
ourselves and the rest, or even make the gap bigger. We are very focused
on that.
“We were very disappointed going out of the Carling Cup,” he admits,
“especially because we won it last year and it felt special to us. But I
think that disappointment is behind us now and we look forward to the
game.”
In the previous League meeting this season, back in mid-September,
Chelsea came away from The Valley with a comfortable 2-0 victory. Scorers
that day were the same pair as last weekend at Sunderland — Hernan Crespo
and Arjen Robben.
Robben is suspended for Sunday's game following his red card on
Wearside but Crespo will be hoping to continue the rich vein of form that
has seen him score in seven of the last nine Chelsea games he has played.
It is eight out of ten if the international against England is included.
Even with Didier Drogba absent as he begins his African Cup of
Nations campaign on Saturday, Crespo's prolific run has the versatile
Gudjohnsen believing that for himself, midfield action is more likely on
Sunday than attack.
“Things seem to be going well up front and the strikers have been
scoring. With Drogba away, the spotlight is a little bit on Crespo but he
has been scoring a lot recently so there is no reason to change anything
in my opinion. Nothing has been talked about me playing as a striker in
this period and as long as I'm on the pitch, I am happy. While I am
playing in midfield and the team is benefiting then it is fine as it is.
“I had a chat with the manager after last season because I played
quite a lot in midfield towards the end,” Chelsea's longest serving
attacking player revealed.
“I asked him where he saw me this season and
he replied you'll play where I need you to play, and that was it.
“I'm happy to play in either position and in recent weeks it has
worked really well in midfield. I feel really comfortable there and I have
been creating a lot chances. The only thing missing this season is me
popping up with a few goals from midfield. If I can add that I think I'll
be doing really well.”
Chelsea have of coursed strengthened the midfield department of the
squad with the transfer window signing of Maniche. The Portuguese
international is nearing the end of the two week's training that on his
arrival Mourinho estimated would be needed to be ready.
“He has fitted in very easily,” reports Gudjohnsen.
“We are an easy
bunch of lads to get along with and we try to make everyone feel welcome.
He is struggling a little bit still with his English but some of the boys'
Portuguese has improved so we have managed to communicate quite a lot.”
Chelsea go into the weekend's fixtures with a 16 point lead at the
top of the Barclays Premiership. Manchester United and Liverpool, in
second and third places respectively, take each other on at Old Trafford
less than an hour after the final whistle at Stamford Bridge.

But you saved me! As difficult and as frustrating as it's been sometimes,
your goddamn strict rationalism and science have saved me a thousand times
over! You've kept me honest, made me a whole person. I owe you everything,
Scully, and you owe me nothing. I don't know if I wanna do this alone...
I don't even know if I can... and
if I quit now, they win.
