Charlton Reserves 3 Chelsea Reserves 0
Monday, Jan 09, 2006
Chelsea's young-look second string found life tough at The Valley
against a Charlton side containing six first team squad players, conceding
in each half of the game.
The south-east London side, the champions at this level, came into
the game on the back of eight goals scored without reply in their last two
matches. Chelsea had battled back to win from a goal down in their most
recent outing but once behind in this one, rarely looked like making amends.
The game began with an impeccably-observed minute's silence in
remembrance of Tony Banks. Following the kick-off, Michael Mancienne
showed early enterprise for Chelsea with a storming run from the back and
a shot that flew wide.
Filipe Morais, fresh from his place on the first team bench on
Saturday, then played a tasty one-two with Simmonds but couldn't beat
Kiely from a narrow angle.
Anthony Grant was booked within the first ten minutes for a mistimed
challenge and Chelsea had to survive three Charlton attacks in quick
succession. But this was followed by the visitors' best period of the game.
Enjoying the good playing surface, Mick McGiven's team stroked the ball
around positively for a ten-minute spell before Charlton ominously took
control.
Midway through the half, Pidgeley made a good save from a swerving
set-piece strike by Gislason. Grant cleared off the line when the
resulting corner was nodded on target by Sankofa and paid for the
clearance with a twisted ankle. He needed prolonged treatment and would
later be forced out of the game.
A free-kick from the left side just a minute later ricocheted around
the box before Bothroyd fired against the post. Chelsea were conceding too
many set-pieces in deep areas and on 30 minutes they were made to pay.
Again the ball came in from the left, Pettigrew and Bothroyd colliding on
the floor and Sankofa prodding home. It was a mess of a goal to concede.
In injury time before the break, Hollands ran onto Morais' ball
inside and shot from 20 yards, forcing Kiely down to grab it. Chelsea went
in at the interval one goal in arrears.
There was a tactical switch in an attempt to create more openings for
the second-half when Morais moved from the right-wing to left. There was
almost reward when Grant's excellent diagonal ball evaded right-back
Wilson, but Morais, in behind, saw his shot blocked by Perry.
Sadly just as hopes were raised, the game was put more-or-less beyond
doubt when Bothroyd chipped into the box and the ball flicked off Gislason
to the far-post where Euell headed in. There was an hour on the clock.
A shooting chance fell Chelsea's way from a low ball in by Morais,
now operating back on the right but Simmonds' attempt wouldn't have stung
Kiely's hands. Mancienne then curved a shot wide straight after a
promising Chelsea move down the left.
There was a change to that left-side with 12 minutes to go when Ryan
Bertrand was given his first taste of reserve action. The youth team's
regular left-back was played further forward than normal.
With nine minutes to go, Charlton's powerful forward line again broke
through. Lisbie, feed by Bothroyd, made space away from Mancienne's
tracking run and fired through Pidgeley's legs to consign the Reserves to
their heaviest defeat since September.
