The Chelsea manager went on to say that Liverpool had defended very well. “They don't give you many chances to create, or many chances to score.” Asked about an apparent altercation between him and the Liverpool bench following a Michael Essien challenge on Dietmar Hamann, Mourinho spoke of how referees are very quick to put him in his place. Referring to an incident some weeks ago, when Manchester City's manager raced onto the pitch to seize the ball and threw it to one of his players in order to keep the game moving, Mourinho joked: “You can imagine what would happen in the Premiership if I did what Stuart Pearce did against Blackburn. Jose Mourinho would be three months banned!” With Barcelona, AC Milan, Inter and Lyon the only known teams Chelsea could be drawn against in the next round, Mourinho does not anticipate another contest like tonight's. “I don't think many teams in Europe play like Liverpool did tonight.” Liverpool's Rafael Benitez was equally noncommittal about finishing top of Group G.
