If you are Jose Mourinho you respond in classic style — by declaring that no matter what the next few weeks hold in store, your team are destined to be Champions once again. Talking to the media ahead of the visit of Blackburn, the Chelsea manager initially reacted strongly to quotes attributed to Everton’s James Beattie. The suggestion was that last Sunday’s draw on Merseyside showed the rest of the Premiership that there is something to be gained by physically ‘getting amongst’ Chelsea. “I think this is not true,” insisted Mourinho. “James Beattie had one touch of the ball in 90 minutes and he scored, from the penalty spot. It was a beautiful penalty, no chance for the keeper, but apart from that, he didn’t touch the ball. “John Terry was afraid of James Beattie?” he asked incredulously. “Robert Huth was afraid of James Beattie or Duncan Ferguson? I don’t think so. “We are ready for everything. We played against Everton, no problems. We didn’t win but no problems. We played against Bolton, a very physical and strong team, no problems. We played twice against Liverpool, a very physical team, no problems. So if they think we are little kids afraid of the fight they are very, very wrong.” It was Mourinho at his quotable best. “What we aren’t is a dirty team,” he continued. “We are not this kind of team and we are not ready for that. But for that referees must be ready. For a physical game, an honest game, like we played against Liverpool, we are ready for it.” The talk of physical battles so close to a visit from Blackburn can’t help but conjure up he spectre of last February’s trip to Ewood Park. A heated and bruising encounter that evening saw Chelsea win but Arjen Robben badly injured and both clubs fined for the conduct of their players. Mourinho was adamant he didn’t have Blackburn especially in mind when talking about his side’s ability to cope with any type of challenge. “I am just saying that we are ready for physical teams. We can cope with aerial battles and we can cope with people who like to press a lot. I only know the way they normally play but maybe they change to play against us,” he commented on the imminent Blackburn test. “We know the best way to think about the result is to think about ourselves and to forget what they have. “It is not our problem. It is something they have to answer their critics about. They have to change if they want to change or they have to carry on if it’s something they believe in. We are not obsessed with them. We just think that we are the best team and we have to perform to get the points. “The draw at Goodison Park made people happy and gave people more hope. Everybody was waiting for Chelsea not to win every game and one day when we lose it will be a holiday in the country. But we are ready for that.” With the two points dropped at Everton followed by the Carling Cup elimination by Charlton, Mourinho pondered a possible change in mentality amongst Chelsea’s future opponents. “I hope they now believe that they can beat Chelsea. What you feel match after match is that against us the only thing they want to do is try not to lose. They defend and defend and defend. “So I hope they think they can beat us and they play their normal way. We know we have to face difficult match after difficult match. We never said we will beat everybody. The only thing we keep saying is we are the best team. And because we are the best team we win more times than other teams. But we are not saying we are supermen. So two draws is normal, one defeat is normal - and we are ready for that.” When the questioning again returned to last season’s Blackburn game, possible bitterness carried over and scores to settle, Mourinho had had enough. “We want to win. Nobody in this country is doing so well as we are doing. I think you need me to say something that can stop the strange questions. Do you want me to say we are going to be Champions? Whatever happens in the next two or three matches, we are going to be Champions. “That stops the strange questions. It doesn’t matter the result against Blackburn, it doesn’t matter the result against Man United.
