The first programme of the talent search show series called Football Icon is being broadcast on Sky One at 7pm. In this hour-long episode the Football Icon roadshow travels around the country from Manchester to the West Midlands and finally, to London, testing the physical aptitude of the boys who believe that they have the necessary ability to play for Chelsea. More than 5000 applicants were given the chance to parade their skills in an attempt to qualify initially for a trial weekend at the Chelsea Youth Academy at Cobham. Tonight, 40 boys will make the cut. Twelve skills tests were devised by Academy director Neil Bath and his staff in order to measure the broad spectrum of basic qualities needed to make the grade as a pro. They created a Chelsea benchmark score to define the minimum standard. Every Football Icon entrant is assessed against this Chelsea benchmark score. This programme highlights the range of backgrounds, the personal motivation and personal desire amongst the boys who are competing for the prize of a professional contract with the Premiership champions. Making the elimination decisions alongside Neil is Ray Wilkins, who as the youngest captain in Chelsea’s history knows a thing or two about teenage football ability. And in the background is Jose Mourinho, who explains the Chelsea philosophy about nurturing local talent. Permeating the programme is the delight amongst many of these 17 year-old contestants that they have been offered a second chance to prove their worth. A sizeable number have had an association with other clubs which turned out to be fruitless. For others, it’s the first time under the sporting microscope.
