We lost 1-0 to Stockport. It was in the old Division Two. A then record 7,000 crowd turned up at Stockport’s ground. The goal came early in the second-half when 22 stone goalkeeper Willie Foulke saved a penalty but Stockport scored from the rebound. Legend has it that when captain Foulke was walking to the ground from the train station, a young Stockport supporter taunted: “You’ll get licked today!” Foulke replied: “Then it’ll be the first time this season, m’lad.” Chelsea didn’t play well and were lucky to leave with just a one goal deficit.
