Delighted coach Brendan Rodgers said: “The spirit of the players from pre-season continued into the first game. We controlled and dominated play after the first 15 minutes, we were excellent.” A goal was conceded in that first period, but both strikers scored in the second-half. First Shaun Cummings finished a good build-up with a strong, left-sided shot. Then, after crashing a 25 yarder against the post, midfielder Jimmy Smith made a great run and slipped in Scott Sinclair who also finished on the left side. There were no bookings. Pre-season included that wonderful run in the Northern Ireland Milk Cup which saw wins over Feyenoord and Porto before the team lost to Barcelona in the final.
